Late Goal Lifts Men’s Soccer to Draw

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team scored a second-half goal to earn a double-overtime, 1-1, draw against conference rival Sonoma State Wednesday. Senior forward Gus Baxter scored his third goal of the season with a header inside the box in the 70th minute.

"Today was an amazing game and I am sure it was very entertaining for the fans," said HSU Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "Both teams gave everything they had. It was a true CCAA battle. I am extremely proud of our guys and the effort and mentality they put into today's game. Sonoma is a very good team and playing them at home makes it even harder."

The first half was evenly matched with both squads registering six shots apiece, but it was the Seawolves (2-1-2, 0-0-1 CCAA) who scored the game's first goal. Midfielder Kyle Owings crossed a ball to the top right third of the box where he found forward Sebastian Santos who fired it into the right corner.

The Lumberjacks (3-1-1, 0-0-1 CCAA) proved they had an answer as they tied the game off a free kick. Senior defender Max Steinmetz lobbed a ball deep into the box as Baxter elevated over defenders and sent a header back over the goalkeeper's fingertips to even the score at 1-1.

HSU's senior goalie Bryan Hernandez continues to impress as he had eight saves in 110 minutes played.

The Jacks return home Sunday, Sept. 16 as they take on San Francisco State at 2 p.m. at College Creek Field.
