Men’s Soccer Battles Gators to a 1-1 Tie

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team faced one of its toughest opponents to date and battled to a 1-1 tie against San Francisco State Sunday afternoon at College Creek Field.

The Gators entered the meeting with a 4-0-1 mark and were fresh off a 2-0 road win over a tough Sonoma State squad. SF State was unable to find the same success against the Green and Gold.

"Today was a difficult game against a very good San Francisco State team," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We got an early goal, but they responded well and deservedly tied the game before halftime."

The Jacks brought pressure from the start, and Gus Baxter tallied their first and only goal off HSU's only shot attempt in the first half. A through ball from Francisco Calderon landed in front of Baxter at center in the box and a rocket shot tipped off goalkeeper Peter Swinkels' fingertips and hit the corner net. Baxter led his team with four total shots.

The Jacks improved their possession in the second half and created enough pressure to put up nine to the Gators' 10 second-half shots. The second half brought more penalties for both teams, including a red card on SF State's Moses Gutierrez. HSU captain Daniel Allred suffered an injury that brought him off the field. Despite coming back in and attempting to play a few more minutes, Allred quickly sat down and was subbed off the field for Rudi McClellan. Both teams totaled three yellow cards by the end of the second and regulation time ended with a score of 1-1.

"While the second half was a bit more even, they continued to be very dangerous going forward," said Jungemann. "While we created opportunities to win the game, any points you can get in this conference are positive."

Overtime brought the same level of intensity, and HSU managed to put three shots on goal in the first and one in the second. With no change to the score, time ran out and the Jacks added another tie to their record. HSU stands 3-1-2 overall.

Humboldt State travels to Cal State Los Angeles for Friday's game with kickoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m. The team stays on the road for Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 23 and is back in Arcata on Sept. 28 to take on Cal State San Marcos.
