Broncos Storm Past Volleyball in Straight Sets

POMONA, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team lost its fourth straight Saturday night as it fell to Cal Poly Pomona 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-17) in Kellogg Arena.

"We showed improvement tonight after a tough loss last night," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood.

The Lumberjacks (3-9, 0-4 CCAA) faced two of the conference's elite on back-to-back nights and were unable to capture a positive road result. Cal Poly Pomona improved to 11-1 overall and 4-0 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play following Saturday's match.

HSU started with a 3-1 lead in the opening set, but was unable to maintain its pace. The Broncos used a 9-3 run to take a 21-10 lead and kept its distance en route to a 25-18 win. Cal Poly Pomona committed nine attack errors in the first set and finished the match with 24 total miscues.

The Broncos jumped out to a 3-0 advantage, but the Green and Gold recovered to twice take the lead in the second. HSU registered a .070 hitting percentage and was unable to keep its advantage as Cal Poly Pomona won 25-20.

"We need to work on our offensive production," said Wood. "We had 20 kills and Pomona had 52, and we were in every set.  If we get more production from a few more hitters we will be a lot more successful versus our opponents."

The home team never trailed and recorded 19 kills for the second time Saturday night in the third and final set. Despite Pomona's offensive execution, HSU twice tied in the set and kept things close until the end of the 25-17 result.

"It's back to work for us again next week," said Wood. "We very much look forward to having two weeks at home."

HSU returns home to face Sonoma State in Lumberjack Arena on Friday night at 5 p.m.
