Volleyball Sinks in Straight Sets Versus Seawolves

ARCATA, Calif. – Sonoma State dealt the Humboldt State women's volleyball team a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-10) loss Friday afternoon in Lumberjack Arena. The loss was the the Green and Gold's fifth straight.

"Tonight was a huge disappointment for our team," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood. "We have been showing progress every week and for the first time tonight we took a step backwards. We are young and over thinking way too much. This weekend off is extremely necessary for us."

Sonoma State jumped out to an early advantage with an 8-0 run to begin the first set. The Seawolves held the lead for the remainder of the set, even though the Lumberjacks twice pulled within three points. Lauren Reid finished with four of HSU's eight kills in the 25-15 decision in favor of the visitors.

The second set was the most competitive of the match, but the Seawolves still opened with a 5-0 lead. Sonoma State increased it's edge to a set-best 10 points, 15-5, before the home team made its move. HSU got within five, 19-14, but ultimately lost 25-20. The Jacks compiled a match-high .108 hitting percentage in the second set.

The Seawolves slammed the door shut in the third frame. Sonoma State scored six of the first seven points and used a 7-0 burst to put the match away. HSU lost the third set 25-10.

Reid led the Green and Gold with seven kills, while Juliana Bertolucci recorded 13 assists. Defensively, Hannah Cantrell recorded four block assists and Natalie Picone had a team-high 12 digs.

HSU will have the weekend off and resumes conference play with Chico State on Friday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m. in Lumberjack Arena.
