Men's Soccer Falls to 12th Ranked Golden Eagles

LOS ANGELES – Four second-half goals proved to be enough for Cal State Los Angeles as it defeated the Humboldt State men's soccer team 5-1 Friday evening.

"Today was a bit of an education for our guys," said Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "CSULA is a very good team, and today was also clinical and ruthless in the right moments. We started reasonably well and held our own for much of the first half. We made a few mistakes though and were punished for it. We started well again in the second half, but their second goal meant we had to chase the game a bit more, and they did a great job of taking advantage of the space created as we pushed forward. Hopefully we can take some positive lessons from today and use them to help us move forward."

Both sides registered four shots on goal in the first half but it was the Golden Eagles who opened the scoring, taking advantage of a free kick. Midfielder Daniel Simonis scored his second goal of the season as he curved the ball into the near post at the 26:53 mark.

The Golden Eagles offense came to life after halftime as the Golden Eagles added four goals to their lead. At the 75:52 mark, midfielder Manuel Garcia drew the keeper out of position and found conference scoring leader Robin Lindahl who finished his fifth goal of the season. HSU forward Marco Silveira got the Jacks on the board in the 82:16 minute after he possessed his own rebound off the keeper and finished, pushing the score to 4-1. In the 89th minute Robin Lindahl sealed the game as he launched a hard shot toward HSU goalkeeper Bryan Hernandez that ricocheted off his hand into the goal making the final score 5-1.

Silveira's goal was the first allowed by LA's defense in three matches.

The Lumberjacks will try to get their first conference win Sunday as they face Cal State Dominguez Hills at 11:30 a.m. in Carson, Calif.
