Chico State Defeats Volleyball 3-0

ARCATA, Calif. – Humboldt State volleyball fell to Chico State in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-18) in Friday's home match.

Lauren Reid started the opening set with an attack over two blockers to put the first point on the board. The Jacks (3-11, 0-6 CCAA) and the Wildcats battled it out throughout the early part of set one. Chico was finally able to take a three-point lead, but a team block by the Wildcats made it 15-13. HSU kept the gap within four and relied on Reid to wrack up another kill at 24-20, but Chico responded with a kill off Savannah Horton's fingertips to end the first set.

The second set followed a similar pattern as the Jacks recorded the first point by Juliana Bertolucci, the Jacks' team leader in assists.  A long rally ended with a dominant kill for Reid, who ended the night with a team-leading 10. HSU kept its lead and outscored Chico 6-3. A tie at 10-10 was broken by a kill by Haley Del Rio. Hannah Cantrell led in total attempts for the night at 32 and was the one to pull a two-point lead over Chico at 19-17. The Wildcats battled back, and an attack error led to the 25-22 final in set two.

An ace and an error for Chico State started the third set off 1-1. The Jacks trailed early but managed to keep the gap at two until a kill by Cantrell tied it up at seven apiece. A break in the tie kept the Jacks trailing, and they failed to get a point as the gap widened to 18-11. Reid recorded a kill to make it 18-12 and she contributed to HSUs total 17 kills and .333 attack percentage in the third set, the highest of the night for the Green and Gold. The Jacks did not see another point entered in the books until an error on Chico State allowed the home team to gain some momentum to trim the lead to 22-18. A failed team block attempt for HSU put the game away for Chico State, 25-18.

The Jacks meet back in Lumberjack Arena tomorrow to take on Stanislaus State. First serve is scheduled for 5 p.m.
