Volleyball Can't Stop Stanislaus in 3-0 Loss

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team fell short to Stanislaus State in all three sets (25-23, 25-22, 25-16) in Saturday evening's match at Lumberjack Arena.

"I am obviously frustrated with the outcome tonight," said HSU Head Coach Kelly Wood, "but the most disappointing part is the way in which we lost, specifically in the first set. We had a significant lead in set one and our youth and inexperience were highlighted tonight. We have got a lot to learn from this."

Lauren Reid dominated early in set one and tallied the first three points on the board. The momentum climbed as the Jacks (3-12, 0-7 CCAA) recorded two more before allowing the Warriors a single point. The visitors closed the gap and brought the game within one until Reid came back with another kill that pushed the Jacks back in the lead, 8-7. Reid totaled 18 kills for the night out of HSUs total 36.  Humboldt held the lead throughout the first set but an ace by Picone brought the Jacks back up by five at 16-11. The home team pushed the lead to five for a third time in the first set at 23-18 but ultimately struggled to finish and watched the Warriors put it away at 25-23.

Stanislaus brought continued pressure in the second set. HSU managed to pull ahead 5-3, but the advantage was short-lived as the visitors evened the game at 5-5. The Jacks drew a two-point lead, but the game remained close the rest of the way. A hard-hitting strike from Kayla Costello was followed with a kill by Summer Hansen and soon the Jacks took a 14-11 lead. Hansen is a team leader with 89 kills behind Reid who totals 139. The set continued back and forth until Stanislaus took a four-point lead at 24-20. Despite Humboldt recording a .182 attack percentage, the best of the evening, the set was put away at 25-21 in favor of the Warriors.

HSU kept fighting into the third set, and the home team put the first point on the board off a serve from Picone. The game stayed in the Jacks favor for a short time as they captured a four-point advantage, 7-3, off an attack by libero Odelia Ryan, assisted by Juliana Bertolucci. Bertolucci totaled 27 assists Saturday and is the team leader with 312. The set was tied at 10 apiece, but the Green and Gold soon fell behind by seven versus Stanislaus' .257 attack percentage. The Warriors proved to be too much in the third and the set ended 25-16. Ryan took a majority of the Warriors attacks as she racked up 23 digs from the Warriors 115 total attack attempts.

HSU travels to San Francisco State for its next match on Oct. 5. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
