Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Zac Alfers

Baxter’s Goal Leads HSU to Win at No. 23 CSU San Marcos

SAN MARCOS, Calif. – After consecutive losses, the Humboldt State men's soccer team bounced back in a big way as it captured its first conference win of the season against No. 23 Cal State San Marcos 1-0 Friday afternoon at The Cage.

Despite being outshot 10-2 and surrendering six corner kicks to HSU's three, the first half remained scoreless with each team recording one shot on goal apiece.

In the second half, it was the Lumberjacks with the more efficient offense with five shots on goal to San Marcos' two. Senior forward Gus Baxter broke up the tied ball game in the 75th minute as he buried a header into the far left corner off a throw-in from Max Steinmetz. Baxter has five goals so far this season, third-best in the conference.

"Our boys fought hard today and fully deserved the result against a very good San Marcos team," said HSU Head Coach Fred Jungemann. "We are very proud of the effort the team put in today, and it was great to get a positive result after several difficult outcomes in a row. Hopefully, this will give us some confidence moving forward into Sunday against UCSD."

Junior goalkeeper Robert Quintero earned his first start of the season for the Green and Gold while starter Bryan Hernandez recovers from an injury. Quintero was a brick wall in the net as he finished with three saves on 18 shots faced. The Yuba City, Calif., product logged his first career complete game shutout in the win.

"Our defense played particularly well, and I am especially happy for them to finish the game with a shutout today," said Jungemann.

The favorable result moves the Jacks to 4-3-2 overall, with a 1-2-2 conference record. The North Coast squad will try to continue its conference success as it faces UC San Diego on Sunday at Triton Stadium. Kickoff at 2 p.m.
