Men’s Soccer Stumbles in 3-1 Loss to UC San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Humboldt State men's soccer team landed a penalty kick but was unable to manage more in Sunday's 3-1 loss versus undefeated UC San Diego.

The first half proved an instant battle between the two teams as each shot from the Jacks was matched by San Diego, including a header from Isaiah Dairo at 15:57 that went wide right. HSU's attempt was countered by a goal off a long cross for the first point in the game at 20:29. As San Diego went up 1-0, the Jacks struggled to keep momentum to close out the half. The Tritons put another point on the board before the buzzer at 41:04 with a through ball that was flicked past Quintero in the bottom right corner.

Following intermission, the Jacks put pressure on San Diego and put up six shots in the first 15 minutes of the second half, including two headers from leading scorers Gus Baxter and Dairo. HSU watched as the Tritons gained a three-point lead off a left-sided cross that was tapped into the net at close range. At 3-0, Danny Allred took a foul in the box that granted him a penalty kick and an open opportunity to score at 79:13. The shot went in the upper right corner, and HSU kept San Diego from recording a shutout. Baxter had one more header on goal in the last minutes, but the North Coast team ultimately fell to the Tritons 3-1.

The Jacks take on Cal State San Bernardino at home at College Creek Field on Friday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m.
