UC San Diego Tops Women’s Soccer 3-1

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team fell on the road to UC San Diego, 3-1, Sunday afternoon.

"Today we ran into a very good team, they are No. 1 in the country for a reason," said HSU Head Coach Paul Karver. "They are talented and very well-coached. We played well for long stretches and when we brought the game back to 2-1 it felt like another would come. In the end, their quality was too much, the final goal that ended the game was absolutely world class."

The Jacks hung with the 9-0 Tritons throughout the first 10 minutes of the game, but a corner kick at 11:30 opened an opportunity for the Tritons to score off the cross. At 1-0, HSU's offense applied pressure even though the Green and Gold took five total shots in the loss. Brooke Townsend covered the net for the Jacks and counted five saves off UC San Diego's 25 total shots. A series of substitutions for the Tritons gave them fresh legs and they managed a second goal off a scramble in the box at 32:39, making it 2-0 UC San Diego going into the half.

The game continued at an even pace into the second half. Townsend faced a series of shots early on, including two that were blocked with help from Jensen Smith and Tana Eri on defense. The Jacks struggled to put a shot on goal until the 73rd minute when leading scorer Alex Jenkins headed a cross into the left side net. HSU looked hopeful with the one-point deficit, but a left side, left-footed shot into the right side of the net at 83:29 solidified the lead at 3-1 in the Triton's favor.

"It will be nice to be at home for a week as we prepare for two very good opponents," said Karver.

Humboldt State takes on Cal State San Bernardino at home on Friday, Oct. 5 at 12:30 p.m.
