ROHNERT PARK, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball took Sonoma State to five sets only to lose to the home team 3-2 (25-21, 24-26, 25-27, 25-17, 15-9) Tuesday evening in the Wolves' Den.
"We lost a heartbreaker tonight," said HSU Head Coach
Kelly Wood. "We're executing well at times, but playing inconsistent and we can't afford that against the teams in our conference. We have a very tough opponent on Thursday in Monterey Bay. Every match we expect to show progress. We look forward to being home after six days on the road."
The Jacks fell to Sonoma after feeling out the team in the first set, a 25-21 loss. HSU got into gear in the second set as they took SSU 26-24, totaling 13 kills in 40 total attempts. The Jacks kept the momentum in the third and recorded a 27-25 victory despite both teams recording 13 kills and 33 total attempts apiece. Sonoma State outshone the Green and Gold in the fourth as they put up 20 kills to HSU's 10 and recorded a .613 hitting percentage to finish the set 25-17 over the Jacks. The fifth and final set proved to be difficult for the Jacks as they walked away with a 15-9 loss to close the game.
The Lumberjacks moved to 3-6 overall and 0-1 against California Collegiate Athletic Association competition following the loss. Sonoma State improved to 5-5 and 1-0 in conference play.
HSU will host Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday night in Lumberjack Arena. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
