Volleyball Drops Home Opener to Monterey Bay

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State volleyball team fell to Cal State Monterey Bay in three sets (26-24, 25-20, 25-19) in Thursday night's home-opening loss.

"I actually feel positive after tonight's match," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "There was progress we showed but we have yet to put everything together. Some aspects of the game always seem to be failing us. If we can put it all together and play with some consistency we will be where we need to be to win those tight games."

The Jacks (3-7, 0-1 CCAA) trailed from the beginning of the first set but kept it close throughout. Behind 20-15, HSU used a Lenox Loving and a pair of Monterey Bay errors to trim the deficit to two. The home team kept within two points, but used a 6-1 spurt to take a 24-22 advantage. Monterey Bay scored the next four points to secure the win.

The second set proved a similar route for HSU as Monterey Bay put the first three points on the board. HSU played within two points until they tied it up at five apiece. The Jacks traded points with the Otters (6-2, 1-0 CCAA) and moved within one, 9-8, before a pair of Monterey Bay runs gave them a five-point cushion. The visitors kept the advantage and won the second set 25-20.

The final set started strong as Lauren Reid recorded a kill to give HSU the early lead. HSU's lead was short-lived despite hitting .171 in the third set. Monterey Bay leaned on Chandler McKean who supplied four of her team-leading 11 kills in the 25-19 victory.

Reid led the Jacks with 15 kills and Juliana Bertolucci contributed 24 assists.

HSU has a bit of a break until Sept. 14 when they travel to Cal State San Bernardino for a 7 p.m. game.
