Women's Soccer Scores Victory Over Western State

| By:
Box Score GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – The Humboldt State women's soccer team sealed its 4-2 victory with a late goal Friday afternoon as it defeated Western State Colorado. The game improves the Jacks to 2-1 on the season.

"We had a really good game and all of the pieces seem to be coming together really well," said sophomore forward Erin Siegel. "It took a team effort, and we are really proud of one another for digging deep to get the win today. It is exciting to see how we are all getting on the same page right in time for our first conference game coming up."

Senior forward Alex Jenkins scored the game's first goal in the 34th minute finishing a through ball from Rose Harman after a long offensive build up. Two minutes later Jenkins volleyed a cross from Maddie Barnett off her chest and buried it in the far corner. HSU kept up the offensive pressure firing 12 shot attempts in the first half. In the 26th minute, Haley Miller took a corner from Pikake Hix and headed the ball across the keeper's face with force for her first goal on the season.

"Today was a very good test allowing us to move forward in the process and grow," said Head Coach Paul Karver. "Alex obviously had a special night, but it was the movement and commitment of the other players that creates things for her. It was wonderful to see the girls grow in our system."

Western State continued to fight in the second half as junior defender Aspen Heale scored the Mountaineers first goal at the 68-minute mark. Mountaineer midfielder Megan Wheelock snuck one past the keeper to make it a one-point game just a minute later. HSU never gave up, and Siegel gave the Jacks a 4-2 lead with her goal in the 72nd minute. Jenkins crossed the ball to the opposite side of the goal where Siegel was waiting, and she rifled the ball into the upper corner.

"Coming out of the half we got far too comfortable and that was a very big lesson for the group, but the way they responded to the challenge was fantastic," said Karver.

HSU will conclude the weekend as they face Colorado Mesa Sunday at Walker Field at 9 a.m.
