ARCATA, Calif--- Summer Hansen and
Lenox Loving combined for 22 kills, but the Humboldt State Lumberjacks lost in four sets (13-25, 25-21, 23-25, 14-25) to the visiting San Francisco State Gators this evening in a CCAA match in Lumberjack Arena. Loving also had 22 digs to go with her 12 kills while
Odelia Ryan had a match high 30 digs.
FIRST SET: The beginning of the match went back and forth until San Francisco State took a 12-7 lead capped by a kill by Trinity Barr. Humboldt State cut the deficit to 15-10 on a kill by
Summer Hansen off an assist from
Riley Tishlarich. The Gators scored the next three points to take a 18-10 lead. They increased their lead to 24-12 on a Cassandra Fong back to back service aces. A kill by
Lexi Riggs snapped the Gator rally to cut SFSU's lead to 24-12, but a kill by Barr gave the Gators the 25-12 set one victory.
SECOND SET: SF State (11-5, 4-3 CCAA) took a a 4-0 early lead in the second set, but the Lumberjacks scored the next five points keyed ty four service aces by
Emma Flewell. The match went back and forth until the visitors took a 11-8 lead on a Barr kill. HSU scored the next eight points to take a 16-11 lead. A kill by Baily Johnson cut HSU's lead to 17-14, but the hosts scored eight of the final 11 points to take the set 25-21 and even the match at 1-1.
THIRD SET: Once again, the set went back and forth until a kill by Lexi Loving gave HSU a 6-5 lead. A service ace by Loving increased the hosts' lead to 10-7. SF State tied the set at 12-12 on a kill by Johnson, but back to back kills by Hansen and
Malia Coyle gave HSU a 14-12 lead. The hosts increased their lead to 19-16, but SFSU would not go away as the Gators took a 23-22 lead on a combined block by Johnson and Payton Jensen. The Gators finished off the set scoring two of the final three points to take the set 25-23 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.
FOURTH SET: SF State took a 13-2 lead in the fourth set until the Lumberjacks (5-9, 1-6 CCAA) cut the deficit to 13-4 on a service ace by
Kayla Costello. The Gators scored the next two points, but the 'Jacks cut the deficit to 16-7 on a hitting error by SFSU and a kill by Ryan off an assist from
Juliana Bertolucci. SFSU scored the next four points to take a 20-7 lead capped by a Jensen ace. HSU cut the deficit to 20-10, but SFSU scored the match's five of the final nine points to take the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
LEADERS: Summer Hansen had a team high 12 kills followed by
Lenox Loving's 10.
Riley Tishlarich led HSU with 29 assists with
Emma Flewell recording a match high four service aces. Kayla Costell and
Odelia Ryan each had two service aces. Ryan added 30 digs while Riggs added 22 digs.
UP NEXT: HSU will be back on the road for two matches in Southern California next week. The Lumberjacks will be in Los Angeles on Friday, October 18 for a 7pm match with the Cal State Los Angeles Golden Eagles. They will also face Cal State Dominguez Hills for a 7pm match on Saturday, October 18 in Carson, Calif.
