ARCATA, Calif.--- Ethan Waters connected on a penalty kick with 15 minutes left in regulation to key Humboldt State Lumberjacks' 4-2 win over the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers. HSU's three other goals came from
Isaiah Dairo (twice) and
Dalton Rice while
Marco Silveira had two assists.
FIRST HALF: Humboldt State took a 1-0 lead in the second minute when
Dalton Rice connected on his third goal of the season off a cross from
Marco Silveira. The Lumberjacks had two chances to double their lead in the eighth minute, but Sean O'Brien stopped both Rice's and
Gus Baxter's shot on goal attempt. It looked like the Pioneers were going to tie the match at 1-1 in the ninth minute when the Lumberjack defense came up big stopping Michael Francisco's attempt with a team save and
Robert Quintero stopped Zach Mason's shot on goal attempt.
Cal State East Bay (2-9, 0-5 CCAA) tied the match at 1-1 in the 17
th minute when Francisco connected on a corner kick by Ishman Rahman. HSU had a chance to retake the lead in the 21
st when
Ethan Waters' shot on goal attempt was stopped the Pioneer goalkeeper. Humboldt State took a 2-1 lead when
Isaiah Dairo connected on his missed shot on goal attempt in the 25
th minute. The Lumberjack had a chance to double their lead in the final minutes of the half, but O'Brien stopped Waters' shot on goal attempt.
SECOND HALF: Cal State East Bay tied the match at 2-2 in the 48
th minute when Tommy Flora connected on a ball from Nick Lamanna.
Marco Silveira had a chance to give the hosts back the lead in the 63
rd minute when he shot attempt went wide. HSU had another to chance for the 3-2 lead, but O'Brien stopped
Gus Baxter's shot on goal attempt in the 71
st minute. Four minutes later, the Lumberjacks took a 3-2 lead on a penalty kick by Waters for his third goal of the season. Humboldt State (6-5, 2-4 CCAA) sealed the win in the final seconds of the match when Dairo scored his team leading ninth goal of the season on a ball from Silveira, which was his team leading eighth assist of the season.
GOALIE: Robert Quintero had two saves in goal in the first 62:11 of the match while
Tab Heinz finished off the match for HSU in goal in the final 27:49. Sean O'Brien had eight saves in goal for the visitors.
UP NEXT: HSU will host Cal State Monterey Bay this Sunday October 20 at 2pm. The Otters lost 1-0 at San Francisco State earlier this afternoon.
