ARCATA, Calif.--- After starting the weekend with a 4-2 victory over Cal State East Bay on Friday afternoon, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks lost 2-1 to the Cal State Monterey Bay Otters in a CCAA match at College Creek Field.
Gus Baxter connected on his fifth goal of the season off a penalty kick for HSU's goal in the 34
th minute.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I feel like we played better today than we did on Friday, unfortunately we are walking off with a difference result," said head coach
Fred Jungemann. "We made a few mistakes early that Monterey capitalized on. The boys did a great job of recovering from there though and played very well for the remainder of the game. Unfortunately, in the end the only thing that matters is scoring and through we created plenty of chances were unable to find the second goal. It doesn't get easier from here, as we are back on the road again next weekend. The only way forward is to regroup, keep fighting, and hope for the best."
FIRST HALF: Isaiah Dairo had a chance to give the Lumberjacks the early lead, but Daniel Lomeli made one of his four save on the day in the sixth minute. Less than a minute later, Josh Marquez connected on his first goal of the season off a ball from Harry Barba and Walmer Martinez to give Cal State Monterey Bay the 1-0 lead. The Otters (6-2, 2-5 CCAA) doubled their lead on a goal by Adrian Rebollar in the 19
th minute off a ball from Pedro Hernandez. In his first start of the season,
Tab Heinz stopped Hernandez's shot on goal attempt in the 22
nd minute. HSU cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 34
th minute when

Dylan Tovani's shot sailed wide as the Otters took a 2-1 lead into the half.
SECOND HALF: The Lumberjacks came out strong in the second half as they had several chances to tie the match at 2-2 including two headers by
Isaiah Dairo and
Ethan Waters that were blocked in the 53
rd minute. Waters had another chance to tie the match for Humboldt State (6-6, 2-5 CCAA) when his shot was blocked by the Otters' defense in the 63
rd minute. Hsu had another chance to tie the match when Alejandro Cortes Garcia's shot went wide of the net in the 69
th minute. Six minutes later,
Martin Calderon had chance for a goal but Lomeli made another save for CSUMB. HSU had three more chances in the final minutes including
Devin Hauenstein's shot on goal attempt in the 83
rd minute that was stopped by CSUMB's goalie as the Otters hung for the 2-1 victory.
GOALIES: Tab Heinz had one save in goal for HSU while Daniel Lomelli had four saves.
UP NEXT: HSU will return to the road this week for a pair of CCAA games in Southern California. The Lumberjacks will face Cal Poly Pomona on Friday, October 25 at 3pm in Pomona. Then a week from today, HSU will be in San Bernardino for a 2pm match with No. 13 Cal State San Bernardino.
