Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Chico State Defeats Lumberjacks on Last Second Goal

ARCATA, Calif.---  Humboldt State had a 1-0 lead for the first 75 minutes, but Chico State scored two unanswered goals in the final 15 minutes including the game-winner with 21 seconds left to key its 2-1 come-from-behind win.  Gus Baxter scored his fourth goal of the season on a penalty kick in the fifth minute for HSU's only goal of the match.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "Our guys played really well today, which makes the result all that hard to swallow," said head coach Fred Jungemann.  "We had a good plan today and hte boys executed very well for the majority of hte game and certainly deserved something for their efforts.  Unfortunately the game can be very cruel at times and today is a perfect example.  We will take some confidence from the performance though and regroup for Sunday's game."

FIRST HALF:  Humboldt State (4-3, 0-2 CCAA) took the 1-0 lead in the fifth minute as Gus Baxter connected on the penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season.  Baxter had a chance to double HSU's lead in the 16th minute, but Jose Paredes stopped the shot on goal attempt by the 'Jacks.  Robert Quintero made two of his saves in the 18th minute, the first off the foot of Servando Higuera and the second off the foot of Matt Hafizie.  Marco Silveira had three chances to double the hosts' lead in the 25th minute, but all three were stopped by the Chico keeper.  Quintero made another save in the final seconds of the half as HSU took a 1-0 lead into the locker room.

SECOND HALF:  HSU had two early chances to double its lead in the second half, but both of Devin Hauenstein's shots were blocked by the Chico defense or sailed wide left.  Motoki Sato had a chance to give HSU a 2-0 lead, but Paredes made one of his six saves on the day.  Chico State (6-1, 2-1 CCAA) tied the match at 1-1 in the 75th minute on a goal by Alex Fluitt on a free kick from 28 yards out.  The Lumberjacks had two chances to retake the lead in the 85th minute, but Baxter's shot attempt went high over the net and Dalton Rice's shot went to the right of the net.  With less than 25 seconds left in regulation, Ronan McEnroe connected on a ball from Fluitt to give Chico State the 2-1 come-from-behind win.

GOALIES:  Robert Quintero had five saves in goal for the Lumberjacks and Jose Paredes had five in goal for Chico State.

UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will host Stanislaus State this Sunday afternoon at 2pm.  The Warriors lost to SF State 2-1 this afternoon in San Francisco, Calif.
