CHICO, Calif.--- Humboldt State fell in four sets to the Chico State Wildcats in the final match of a three-game road trip. The 'Jacks dropped the match 3-1 (25-23, 17-25, 14-25, 16-25) to the home team in Chico, Calif. The Wildcats now stand 9-6 overall and 5-2 in the CCAA conference. Humboldt State heads back up north to take on Cal State East Bay at home in Lumberjack Arena on Oct. 10.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Our girls bounced back and played with much more toughness than they did last night," said Head Coach Kelly Wood. "Our passing really hurt us tonight, we need to get much better in that area in order to prevent teams from making big runs against us. Summer Hansen led us tonight with 11 kills. Emma Flewell continued her strong weekend with seven kills, three aces and four blocks."
FIRST SET: The 'Jacks held a lead throughout a majority of the first set before Chico closed the gap at 18 a piece. An exchange of points between teams brought the set back to a tie at 20-20. Shortly after, Emma Flewell and Malia Coyle registered two blocks to drive HSU up 23-20. A kill by Carla Crespo from Odelia Ryan put the 'Jacks up 24-20. Chico came from behind to put pressure on Humboldt's lead before a Wildcat attack error handed HSU the win 25-23.
SECOND SET: After putting the first point on the board, Humboldt tossed the lead back and forth with Chico early in the second set. The Wildcats drew a four point lead over the 'Jacks and pushed the score 12-7. Lenox Loving put up a kill with an assist from Juliana Bertoluccci who took the back line and followed it up with a service ace. The set was put within one following a kill from Malia Coyle, putting the 'Jacks deficit to one at 15-14. HSU struggled for momentum as Chico State ran up six more points before the Humboldt could score again. Despite the attempt, the Wildcats took set two 25-17.
THIRD SET: Humboldt came out in set three going up 4-2 over Chico. The teams held a tie at five and again at eight a piece. The Wildcats pulled away and put six over the 'Jacks, 14-8. A kill by Flewell and another by Summer Hansen both set up by Riley Tishlarich put the score 15-11. The next four points were put on by Chico State before a pair of kills from Hansen gave Humboldt some help. At 19-14, the Wildcats continued to surge and closed set three out 25-14.
FOURTH SET: The fourth set was sparked with a kill from Hansen followed by an ace by Flewell. A pair of service aces from Kayla Costello landed Humboldt ahead 7-3. Loving landed three kills to keep the lead for the 'Jacks 12-6. Tishlarich landed a kill and assisted in two more for a Humboldt 15-10 lead. The Wildcats pulled away after that and finished the fourth set 25-16, winning the match 3-1.
LUMBERJACK LEADERS: Summer Hansen led Humboldt State (5-8, 1-5 CCAA) with 11 kills followed by Lenox Loving with eight and Emma Flewell with seven. Flewell led with three service aces and recorded four blocks. Crespo and Costello backed her up with two service aces a piece. Odelia Ryan had 14 digs and Riley Tishlarich capped out at 22 assists.
