Cal State East Bay Takes First Of Two Matches from Lumberjacks

HAYWARD, Calif.---  Cal State East Bay took the first of two matches this weekend earlier this afternoon from the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks (18-25, 22-25, 13-25) at Pioneer Gymnasium in Hayward, Calif.  Lennox Loving had a team high 15 kills to lead the visitors while Odelia Ryan had 18 kills.
 
FIRST SET:  Cal State East Bay took an 11-3 lead in the first set.  Humboldt State cut the deficit to 18-12 on a kill by Malia Coyle.  The Pioneers increased their lead to 22-16 on a kill by Steena Hubbrd.  The Lumberjacks' Lexi Riggs recorded a kill to cut the deficit to 22-17, but CSUEB finished off the set taking three of the final four points to take the set 25-18.
 
SECOND SET:  The second set went back and forth until a kill by Kara Green gave the Pioneers a 14-8 lead.  Humboldt State scored eight of the next 11 points to cut the Pioneer lead to 17-16 capped by a Emma Flewell kill.  An ace by Carla Crespo tied the set at 18-18 and back to back kills by Lexi Riggs and Lenox Loving  tied the match at 20-20 for HSU. Cal State East Bay tooka. 24-20 lead, but the 'Jacks had a kill by Loving and a hitting error by the Pioneers to cut the deficit to 24-22.  A kill by Julie May finished off the set to give CSUEB the set 25-22 and increase their lead in the match 2-0.
 
THIRD SET:  A kill by Keliy Markham gave the Pioneers a 6-3 lead early in the third set.  Back to back kills by Summer Hansen and Lexi Riggs tied the match at 7-7 for the visitors.  Cal State East Bay recorded ten of the next 14 points to take a 17-11 lead. HSU cut the deficit to 17-12, but the Pioneers scored the next seven points to take a 24-12 lead.  A kill by Coyle cut the Pioneer lead to 24-13, but a kill by Steena Hubbard gave CSUEB the set 25-13 and the match 3-0.
 
LUMBERJACK LEADERS:  Lenox Loving had 15 kills to lead the way for HSU while Juliana Bertolucci had 15 assists as did Riley TishlarichOdelia Ryan had a team high 18 digs while Kayla Costello added15.
 
UP NEXT:  The Lumberjacks will face Cal State East Bay on Sunday, November 10 at 1pm in a make-up match from late in October.  HSU will return home on Tuesday November 12 at 5pm when the 'Jacks entertain Sonoma State.  Prior to the match, HSU will recognize its three seniors in Kayla Costello, Emma Flewell and Odelia Ryan
