IRVINE, Calif..--- The visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks outscored their hosts, Concordia-Irvine Eagles, 43-30 in the second half to key their 67-56 road win this evening in Irvine, California.
Alexia Thrower led the way for Humboldt State (2-1) with 18 points while
Sandin Kidder had a season high 17 points for the victors while
Molly Dixon chipped in 12 points.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "This is certainly a great road win for us," said head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We tell the girls all the time that it takes toughness to win on the road and I thought they showed that tonight. We knew that we didn't play a good first half and we needed to make some changes. The team did a great job of staying the course and finishing the game off by knocking down free throws. I'm proud of their effort tonight."
FIRST QUARTER: A
Sandin Kidder capped an 8-2 run by the Lumberjacks to begin the first quarter for the Lumberjacks. Concordia-Irvine (2-1) outscored HSU 8-6 in the next few minutes to cut the 'Jack lead to 14-10 on a Jasmine Rachal lay-up. HSU finished the quarter taking a 16-11 lead heading into the next ten minutes.
SECOND QUARTER: Concordia-Irvine opened up the second quarter outscoring its guests 11-6 in the first seven minutes to tie the game at 2-22 on a three by Katie Timmerman. The Eagles took a 24-22 lead on a lay-up by Michaela Vanderklugt. They increased their lead to 26-22 on a jumper by Rachal with just 29 seconds left in the half, but a jumper by
Sandin Kidder cut the Eagle lead to 26-24 heading into the half.
THIRD QUARTER: Humboldt State retook eh lead, 27-26, to begin the second half on a three by
Gabrielle Carbajal off an assist from
Emily Packham. The Lumberjacks increased their lead to 36-28 on two free throws by
Molly Dixon with 5:47 left in the third quarter. Concordia-Irvine did not go away as the hosts cut the deficit to 38-33 on a three by Rachel with 4:33 to go in the third ten-minute period. HSU increased its lead to double digits on a lay-up by
Alexia Thrower off a pass from Kidder (44-33). The Eagles cut the 'Jack lead to 46-39 as they finished the quarter on a 6-2 run.
FOURTH QUARTER: Concordia-Irvine kept its run going as the Eagles cut HSU's lead to 46-43 on a lay-up by Jasmine in the first two minutes of the final quarter. Back to back lay-up by Thrower increased HSU's lead to 50-43. Humboldt State took a 57-48 lead on a three by Dixon with just 2:19 left in regulation. The 'Jacks sealed the game by going six-for-six from the line with Kidder, Carbajal and Thrower each going two-for-two from the line in the final 42 seconds of the game.
LUMBERJACK LEADERS: Three players scored in double digits for HSU in
Alexia Thrower (18 points),
Sandin Kidder (17 points) and
Molly Dixon (12 points). Thrower and Kidder paced HSU each with eight rebounds. Three players had three assists each in Kidder, Dixon and
Gabrielle Carbajal.
Madison Collins and
Emily Packham led HSU each with two assists.
FREE THROWS: HSU went 11-for-12 from the line with four players not missing an attempt in
Gabrielle Carbajal (four-for-four),
Molly Dixon (three-for-three) and Saddin Kidder (two-for-two).
