ARCATA, Calif..--- The Humboldt State Lumberjacks outscored Notre Dame de Namur 24-9 in the second half to key their 62-49 win over the visiting Notre Dame de Namur Argonauts.
Alexia Thrower paced the Lumberjacks with her second consecutive double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds.
Gabrielle Carbajal chipped in eight points for the Lumberjacks and grabbed a career high 10 rebounds for the victors.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I was pleased with our defensive intensity to begin the game," said head coach
Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We just need to maintain it for 40 minutes. We were too inconsistent in the second half and we must learn from tonight. I thought we did a good job of managing the clock down the stretch and made a couple of big plays. It's great to get the win and we now have to prepare for the next challenge."
FIRST QUARTER: A three by
Gabrielle Carbajal capped a 7-0 run by the Lumberjacks to begin the game. Humboldt State (5-1) increased its lead to 10-0 on a three by
Madeline Hatch off an assist from
Tyra Turner. A lay-up by Cheyenne Jankulovski cut HSU's lead to 12-9 with just 2:23 left in the first quarter. The Lumberjacks finished the quarter outscoring their visitors 5-2 to take a 17-11 lead into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Humboldt State took a 28-14 lead on a jumper by
Sandin Kidder off another assist by Turner to begin the second ten minutes. A three by
Emily Packham capped a 11-4 run by the 'Jacks as they took a 39-18 lead with just 2:08 left in the half. A lay-up by
Jasmine Reupenny off a pass from Carbajal gave HSU a 41-20 lead into the half.
THIRD QUARTER: Notre Dame de Namur (2-3) started the third quarter on a 14-6 run to cut HSU's lead to 47-34 with three minutes left in the third quarter. A made free throw by Thrower increased HSU's lead to 48-34, but a three by Lauren Rabena cut the Lumberjack lead 48-37 into the final ten minutes.
FOURTH QUARTER: The visitors cut their run going as they cut the deficit to 48-42 on a three by Rabena two minutes into the final quarter. HSU went on a 6-0 run capped by a lay-up by Thrower to increase their lead to 52-42. Notre Dame de Namur did not go away as the Argonauts cut the Lumberjack lead to 54-48 with just 4:21 left in regulation. A jump by Thrower capped a game ending 4-1 run by the 'Jacks as they took the 62-49 non-conference victory.
ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Alexia Thrower recorded her second double-double with 27 points and 12 rebounds in 37 minutes of action. She also had one assists and a steal for the 'Jacks.
JUST SHY: Gabrielle Carbajal just missed her first double-double of the season this evening. She scored eight points and grabbed a career high 10 rebounds while dishing out four assists and recording three steals for HSU.
17:9: Humboldt State had 17 assists with just nine turnovers this evening.
Tyra Turner had nine assists with three turnovers while
Gabrielle Carbajal had four assists with no turnovers.
Sandin Kidder and
Molly Dixon each had one assist and no turnovers.
SHE'S BACK: Madeline Hatch scored five points and dished out one assists in 11 minutes of action this evening. This was her first action of the regular season for the 'Jacks.
OTHER CLASSIC GAME: Cal State East Bay defeated Dominican University 93-66 in the first game of the Thanksgiving Classic earlier this evening. Notre Dame de Namur will face Cal State East Bay tomorrow afternoon while the Lumberjacks will host Dominican in the final game of the classic tomorrow at 7pm.
