Lumberjacks’ Rally Falls Short In Final Game of West Region Crossover Classic

ARCATA, Calif..---  After trailing 41-31 at the half, Humboldt State rallied to take a 63-62 lead mid-way through the fourth quarter, but Western Washington (2-0) outscored the Lumberjacks 14-10 in the final four minutes to take the early season west region match-up at Lumberjack Arena.  Alexia Thrower paced the Lumberjacks with her 23 points and eight rebounds.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "I am really proud of our team tonight," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson.  We dug ourselves a whole early, but found a way to put ourselves in position to win the game.  We're certainly a different team without Tyra Tuner, however, we had other players step up and give positive contribution.  Of course, it's disappointing to not come away with the win but I learned a lot of positive things about our team tonight and we can certainly build from this."

FIRST QUARTER:  A lay-up by Katrina Gimmaka gave the Vikings a 15-6 lead with 3:30 left in the first quarter.  A Molly Dixon three cut the deficit to 15-9 for HSU, but a three by Maddison Coleman increased the visitors' lead to 20-11 with a little over a minute left in the first quarter.  A jumper by Alexia Thrower cut HSU's deficit to 20-13 heading into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER:  Humboldt State outscored Western Washington 6-2 in the first two minutes of the second quarter capped by two free throws by Dixon (22-19).  Another three by Maddison Coleman increased the Vikings' lead to 25-19 with 7:04 left in the half.  A three by Dixon off a pass from Gabrielle Carbajal cut the 'Jack deficit to 31-27 with 3:31 on the clock, but the Vikings finished the half outscoring HSU 10-4 to take a 41-31 lead into the locker room.

THIRD QUARTER:  Western Washington started taking a 43-31 lead on a jumper by Kelsey Rogers.  A jumper by Thrower cut WWU's lead to 47-41 mid-way through the third quarter.  A three by Dani Iwami increased the WWU lead to 54-44, but a three-point play by Thrower cut the deficit to 54-42 heading into the final quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER:  The Vikings scored the first four points of the final quarter to take a 60-52 lead just two minutes into the fourth quarter.  Humboldt State (1-1) would not go away as the 'Jacks went on a 11-2 run capped by a three by Molly Dixon off a pass from Sandin Kidder to take a 63-62 lead.  WWU outscored HSU 13-9 to take a 75-72 lead with just 14 seconds left in regulation.  HSU had a chance to tie the game, but HSU went one for two from the line and had a turnover.  Katrina Gimmaka's free throw sealed the game for WUU, 76-73.

FOUR PLAYERS IN DOUBLE DIGITS:  Alexia Thrower had a game high 22 points while Molly Dixon chipped in 17 points.  Sandin Kidder added 12 points for HSU with Gabrielle Carbajal added 10 points.

19-22 FROM THE LINE:  HSU went 19 for 22 from the line with Alexia Thrower going nine-for-ten and Molly Dixon five-for-six.  Sandin Kidder was three for four and Gabrielle Carbajal was two for two.

ALL-TOURNEY:  Both Alexia Thrower and Molly Dixon were named to the All-Tournament Team of the West Region Crossover Classic.

UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will travel to Irvine, Calif., on Friday, November 15 for a 5:30pm non-conference game with Concordia-Irvine.  The Lumberjacks will return home on November 21 when they host Sonoma State in their CCAA opener.
