CHICO, Calif.--- The Chico State Wildcats outscored the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks 50-30 to key their 93-66 win this evening in Chico.
Zachariah Christian paced the Lumberjacks with a career high 20 points while
Jackson Strong chipped in 16 and
Amari Green added 13 points.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "We came out with some fire tonight, showed some fight, and battled in a rivalry game on the road," said head coach
Steve Kinder. "Our team was short-handed with some injuries, lacked some scoring production and did not defend well in the last five minutes of the game. The holiday break will give us an opportunity to change gears prepare for five home games in January."
FIRST HALF: Zachariah Christian scored the Lumberjacks' first nine points as they took a 9-6 lead in the first four minutes of the game. Two made free throws by
Jackson Strong increased the visitor lead to 19-14 at the 13:01 mark of the first half. A three by Isaiah Brooks cut HSU's lead to 19-17, but the Jacks went on a 7-0 run capped by a three by
Leland Green to take a 24-17. Once again, Chico State (9-3, 5-2 CCAA) cut the 'Jack lead to 24-22. Humboldt State went on a mini 5-0 run to take a 29-22 lead on a three by
Amari Green off an assist from Christian. The Wildcats finished the final six points outscoring HSU 21-7 to take a 43-36 lead into the locker room.
SECOND HALF: Chico State continued its run early in the second half as the Wildcats increased their lead to 51-38 on a lay-up by Isaiah Brooks. A lay-up by Justin Briggs increased the hosts' lead to 63-48 eight minutes into the new half. A three by
Jackson Strong with five minutes left in regulation cut the Wildcat lead to 73-62, but the hosts finished the game outscoring HSU 20-4 to take the 93-66 victory.
CHRISTIAN: Zachariah Christian had a season high 20 points going eight-for-14 from the field including two-for-four from three's and connecting on both of his attempts from the line. He also had one block and an assist while grabbing eight rebounds.
JUST FOUR: Humboldt State went 22-for-26 from the line this evening including
Jackson Strong making a career high 11 on his 12 attempts.
Amari Green was a perfect six-for-six with
Isaiah Pope going three-for-three and
Zachariah Christian two-for-two.
THREE IN DOUBLE DIGITS: The Lumberjacks had three players in double digits paced by
Zachariah Christian's 20 points followed by
Jackson Strong's 16 and
Amari Green's 13.
UP NEXT: Humboldt State will return to Lumberjack Arena to begin a three-game home stand on January 4 at 7:30pm against Stanislaus State. The Lumberjacks will host Cal State San Marcos (January 9) and No. 8 UC San Diego (January 11)
