Softball Defeats Minot State 13-1, Improves to 2-0

LAS VEGAS – Mariah Tovar hit a sixth-inning grand slam to punctuate a Humboldt State softball victory, 13-1, over Minot State Friday night in game two of the Desert Stinger Tournament.

The Lumberjacks improved to 2-0 after defeating the University of Mary 7-6 in their season opener earlier in the evening.

"It was really nice to come away from today with two wins," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "It was great to start the season on a positive note and set the tone for the rest of the season. They weren't as pretty as we would like but we will continue to grow and get better everyday."

HSU got on the board in a big way with seven runs in the top of the first inning. Danica Grier scored the game's first run off a wild pitch, and the Jacks added to their lead with seven hits including a two-out, two-run double from Hanna Holland that put the Green and Gold up 7-0.

Haley Suter added an RBI single to right centerfield in the second to extend HSU's lead to 8-0. The sophomore joined senior Illa Haley with three hits in the ball game.

Jasmine Hill got the start for the Jacks and held Minot State to just a single through three innings. She allowed the Beavers' lone run in the fourth inning as they fired a single up the middle to break up the shutout. Hill logged 5.0 innings and surrendered three hits and a run as she cruised to her first win of the year.

The Jacks piled on five more runs, including the Tovar round-tripper to end the game in six.

Eight Lumberjacks recorded a hit in the win, and the team amassed 14 total hits. Hanna Holland recorded her second stolen base in as many games versus the Beavers.

"I have to give credit to all my players. they dealt with first day jitters and things not happening as planned but the keep their heads up and stuck together," said Sarchett.

HSU continues to Desert Stinger Tournament with a game against Central Washington Saturday at 2 p.m. The Green and Gold will conclude the day with a game versus Concordia (Calif.) at 7 p.m.
