Jacks’ Bats Silenced Versus Colorado Christian

LAS VEGAS – The Humboldt State softball team spotted Colorado Christian three runs in the first inning and was never able to catch up as the Lumberjacks lost by a score of 11-1 to wrap their Desert Stinger stay.

"Well, it's early in the season and we are going to take today's game as a teaching moment and work on the things that we had a hard time with today," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "It was a good learning day for the team, and we will just grow from here."

HSU moved to 2-1 overall and will head home after missing out on two regional games due to inclement weather Saturday.

Jasmine Hill toed the rubber in Sunday's game and surrendered three consecutive singles to give Colorado Christian a 1-0 advantage. The Cougars brought home two more runs in the frame, and Hill was lifted after 2.0 innings of work.

HSU replaced Hill with Lexee Sheiring in the circle after the second, but the results weren't much better. Sheiring threw a wild pitch with two outs and runners at second and third to plate the Cougars fourth run.

After scoring 13 runs in Friday's nightcap, the Jacks managed just three hits in the first two innings. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Micaela Harris drew a walk and Rylie Carlier brought her home as she slashed a RBI single into right centerfield.

The Cougars added four more runs in the sixth and three in the seventh en route to the win.

Colorado Christian starting pitcher Kenzie Mattey limited the Green and Gold to four hits over the final four innings and captured her first win of the season. Mattley scattered a total of eight hits in the complete game victory.

Danica Grier finished with a team-leading three hits versus the Cougars, and Harris drew two walks. Grier was named to the Desert Stinger Classic All-Tournament Team.

The Jacks open their California Collegiate Athletic Association slate next weekend in Rohnert Park, Calif. Game one of the four-game series against Sonoma State is scheduled for a noon start on Friday.
