Women’s Basketball Wins Fifth Straight, Defeats Toros 76-66

CARSON, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team fended off a late run from Cal State Dominguez Hills and defeated the Toros 76-66 for its fifth straight win Thursday night in the Torodome.

"We had talked a great deal about getting off to a good start, and I thought the girls were really focused on setting the tone on the defensive end," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "We put so much emphasis on player tendencies and taking players out of what they like to do, and we did a good job of that tonight."

The Jacks relied on their aggressive defense as they forced eight first-half turnovers and held the Toros to shoot 21.6 percent from the field. Isa Conde led all scorers with 12 points as HSU held a 47-28 advantage heading into the locker room.

HSU led by 17 with 8:39 to play, but the North Coast squad was held scoreless for almost five minutes as the home team mounted a comeback. Dominguez Hills trimmed the deficit to seven points with three minutes remaining before the Green and Gold regained their composure to hold on for the win. Despite being outrebounded 52-41, the Jacks played team basketball as they finished the game with 20 assists.

Tyra Turner recorded her third double-double of the season and finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals. Alexia Thrower and Conde each ended the night with 17 points, while Jovanah Arrington chipped in 10 points and five rebounds.

"I really think Tyra Turner was very aggressive tonight," said Bento-Jackson. "She was doing a great job of sharing the ball."

Zhane Carter led the Toros with 16 points on a 5-for-12 shooting night. Lea Anderson scored 15 points and Ahlisha Henderson finished with a game-high 11 rebounds.

The Jacks will look to solidify their playoff position as they take the court against Cal State Los Angeles Saturday at 1 p.m.

"It's going to be senior night for LA so they are going to be playing hard for their seniors, and they are going to be playing confident after their win over Chico," said Bento-Jackson. "It's about growing up and being a mature basketball team, focusing on us and not the opponent."
