Gators Take Three from Jacks in Friday Tripleheader

ARCATA, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball team had its chances, stranding 25 total baserunners, but was unable to get a clutch hit as it suffered three losses to San Francisco State Friday afternoon at McKinleyville High School Softball Field. The Lumberjacks lost to the Gators 2-1 in the opener, 13-2 in five innings in the second game and they lost the third meeting 6-3.

HSU played a Friday tripleheader to avoid a rainy weekend forecast and, although the North Coast squad was the home team, SF State got all the breaks in this unusual series setup.

"We still have a lot of work to do," said Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We left a lot of people on base. We only put six runs up in three games, and that is unacceptable. We're a better hitting team than that, and I hope these games light a fire in our players."

Rylie Carlier drilled a solo home run to left centerfield to give the Green and Gold a 1-0 edge in the second inning of game one. The Gators answered with a pair of solo shots in the sixth frame to earn the victory. Lexee Sheiring logged 5.2 innings and surrendered both runs in the first game. HSU stranded 10 baserunners in the series opener, while senior Hanna Holland contributed two of the team's eight hits.

The Gators struck first and plated seven runs in the first inning of the next ballgame. Danica Grier got the Jacks on the scoreboard with an RBI double to centerfield in the bottom of the frame. HSU added another run in the second as Illay Haley scored from second base after a fielder's choice and throwing error. SF State added to its advantage with six more runs over the next three innings. The home team finished with six hits, and Carlier drew a pair of walks.

For the second consecutive game, SF State got on the board first; this time with a solo roundtripper from Brylynn Vallejos in the first. Junior Mariah Kalamaras made the most of her game three start at third base by evening the score with a sacrifice fly in the following inning, and a Haley triple brought two more Jacks home in the third to make it 3-1 in favor of HSU. The visitors retook the lead with three runs on four hits in the fifth inning and put the game out of reach with two more in the sixth. Carlier finished with a team-high two hits, while Mariah Tover and Holland combined for five walks in the loss. Jasmine Hill took the loss in game three after taking over for starter Megan Holt. Hill pitched 1.1 innings and allowed three earned runs in relief.
