Women’s Basketball Avoids Trap in Turlock

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Humboldt State women's basketball team recovered from a poor first-half shooting performance and captured a 65-58 road win over Stanislaus State Thursday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

The Lumberjacks improved to 13-6 overall and 11-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the victory.

"We are happy to leave here with a win," said HSU Head Coach Michelle Bento-Jackson. "It certainly wasn't our best game but we found a way to win which isn't easy on the road. "We will get some things fixed this week in practice to prepare for a tough Pomona team."

Neither team had an inspired offensive performance in the first 20 minutes, but it was the home team that carried a 28-25 lead into halftime. The teams combined to go 2-for-24 from outside the arc, and HSU sharpshooter Madeline Hatch connected on the team's only long-range basket in the first half. Stanislaus State closed out the second period with a 5-0 burst to lead by three at the break, and the home team looked as if it had broken out of the scoring spell and grabbed hold of the game's momentum at intermission.

Alexia Thrower led the Green and Gold with 11 points in the first 20 minutes, and she was 4-of-5 shooting from the field and 3-for-3 at the charity stripe. The game's opening half featured six ties and three lead changes.

HSU erased its deficit with a Tyra Turner layup and Hatch trey in the first two minutes of the third quarter. The Warriors answered with a 3-pointer of their own before the North Coast team took off on a 12-0 run to take a commanding 42-31 advantage at the 4:08 mark. Isamar Conde supplied seven of the Jacks' 12 points and finished with 18 total.

The Green and Gold outscored Stanislaus State 25-10 in the third quarter, but the game was far from over. HSU shot 25 percent from the field in the final 10 minutes, and the home team managed to pull within three points, 59-56, with 1:08 to play. Despite the Warriors' success playing the foul game and scoring quick baskets, the Jacks held on for the win.

Thrower finished the game with her team-leading 12th double-double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds. Turner narrowly missed recording her first double-double of the year as she closed out the game with 11 points and nine board.

HSU will host Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday, Feb. 14 in Lumberjack Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. Fans are encouraged to wear pink as the team will support the battle against cancer. Thursday's doubleheader will also feature the annual HSU Faculty and Staff Appreciation event that includes a catered social on the third floor of the Kinesiology and Athletics Building for campus faculty and staff. The social will begin at 6 p.m.
