Tovar Delivers Round Trippers Versus Pioneers, Softball Falls Twice

ARCATA, Calif. – A pair of Mariah Tovar home runs weren't enough to help lift the Humboldt State softball team out of its losing streak as the Lumberjacks dropped both of their Saturday games to Cal State East Bay by a score of 9-2.

HSU moved to 7-18 overall and 3-17 versus California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents.

The Pioneers drove in nine runs on 11 hits in the series opener. East Bay plated two runs in the first and a Lauren Lipe RBI single cut into the visitor's lead. HSU's only other run came on a solo shot from Tovar in the bottom of the fifth. Pitcher Abby Greer put together an impressive performance for the Pioneers as she limited the Green and Gold to five hits after the first frame en route to a complete game victory. HSU's Megan Holt logged 4.2 innings and surrendered six runs, four earned, and allowed seven hits. Illa Haley and Tover each finished with two hits apiece for the Jacks.

East Bay continued to find success against HSU pitching in game two. The Pioneers scored eight of their nine runs off starter Lexee Sheiring. The sophomore lasted 5.0 innings, yielded nine hits and issued four walks. Tovar struck again, this time with a two-run homer, in the night. Danica Grier led off the sixth with a double before Tovar matched Rylie Carlier with her team-leading fifth long ball.

The Jacks face the Pioneers again Sunday at HSU Softball Field. The first game of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
