Softball Splits Saturday Twinbill at Tournament of Champions

TURLOCK, Calif. – Humboldt State softball finished day two of the Tournament of Champions with a split against Azusa Pacific and Holy Names. The Cougars dealt the Jacks a 10-2 loss in five innings before the North Coast team rebounded for a 9-5 victory over the Hawks in game two.

A two-run single from Haley Suter in the bottom of the second was the highlight of game one, however, the Green and Gold struggled to get their offense going as they only recorded three hits. Megan Holt tossed the first three innings and took the loss after surrendering four runs, three earned on four hits and three walks.

All three HSU hits came in the second inning beginning with a JoAna Mullins single down the leftfield line as she eventually scored off Suter's single the next at-bat. Micaela Harris beat out an infield single to third base before swiping second for her eighth steal of the year.

An RBI single up the middle from Harris put the Jacks on the board early in game two before HSU extended its lead to 2-0 following a squeeze play as Rylie Carlier logged the sacrifice bunt that scored Hanna Holland.

The score remained tied 4-4 after seven complete innings. Mariah Tovar singled up the middle and plated a run to give the Jacks a 5-4 advantage, but the Hawks tied the game in the bottom of the eighth with a run-scoring single of their own.

A one-run double from Illa Haley in the ninth sparked a four-run Green and Gold scoring outburst as the North Coast squad held on for the win. Lexee Sheiring logged her longest performance of the year, earning her fourth win after hurling nine complete innings. Sheiring allowed two earned runs on eight hits and tossed 122 pitches.

HSU will wrap up its Tournament of Champions stay tomorrow as it takes the field against Hawaii Hilo at 10 a.m. at Pedretti Sports Complex.
