Toros Finish Sweep of HSU Softball

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball team finished its four-game series with a pair of losses to Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday. The Lumberjacks fell 4-1 in the first game before dropping game two, 15-3.

"We just can't get any consistency across the board," said HSU Head Coach Shelli Sarchett. "We know there is a problem on the pitching mound and, at some point, the pitchers have to put things on their shoulders and do something to improve. Our pitching staff has to turn around and do a job because our hitters are putting up enough runs to win ball games. When you are constantly playing from behind and getting beaten down, you can only have so much spirit. We aren't going to roll over, we're going to fight and, hopefully, something starts clicking."

HSU moved to 4-13 overall and 2-12 versus California Collegiate Athletic Association opposition.

With runners on the corners in the second frame of game one, JoAna Mullins stole second while Haley Suter scored on the throwdown as the Jacks trailed 2-1. HSU managed eight hits and loaded the bases in the final frame, but it struggled to translate baserunners into runs. The Toros matched the Jacks hitting total and added two more runs in the fifth thanks to a two-RBI single from Rachael Sandoval.

Cal State Dominguez Hills took control of the series finale with two runs in the first before exploding with seven more in the sixth. The Jacks' first run came off a squeeze play that scored Sutter as Maddie Allen dropped a bunt into no man's land as she reached first safely. A leadoff walk from Rylie Carlier in the bottom of the sixth sparked a two-run rally for HSU which was capped by a Katelyn Dendas RBI single.

One bright spot in the team's game two loss was a record-tying performance from senior outfielder Hanna Holland. The Oakdale, Calif., native swiped her 145th base in the nightcap which tied her career total with that of program leader Jamie Peterson.

The Green and Gold return to action Thursday at the Humboldt State Softball Field as they host Notre Dame de Namur in a non-conference doubleheader with first pitch scheduled for 11 a.m.
