Softball Extends Winning Streak to Six, Takes Two from Cougars

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. – Humboldt State softball extended its winning streak to six as it captured a pair of victories Friday versus Cal State San Marcos. The Lumberjacks won the series opener 4-3 and took the nightcap by a score of 8-7.

HSU improved to 17-23 overall and moved to 8-20 against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponents.

The Green and Gold managed just five hits in the opener, but they made them count. Hanna Holland led off the third with a line drive single down the left field line and Micaela Harris brought her home with a single two batters later. Harris fired her base hit into right, but the right fielder misplayed the ball and her three-base miscue proved to be costly as it gave the Jacks a 2-0 advantage.

A solo homer from Kammy Fisher got San Marcos on the board in the fourth, and the visitors plated a run in the fifth and sixth to move in front 3-2.

Illa Haley got the HSU rally started with a one-out single in the seventh, but a Holland strikeout during the follow at-bat looked like trouble for the home team. Back-to-back singles from Danica Grier and Harris evened the score and Mariah Kalamaras was hit by a pitch which loaded the bases. Reliever Caitlin Vinyard tossed a wild pitch to the next batter to bring Sarah Salinas home from third and end the ballgame.

Lexee Sheiring started the game for the Green and Gold and went the distance. She allowed three runs on 13 hits en route to her seventh victory of the year.

The Jacks improved at the plate in the nightcap and led 7-3 after five innings. HSU was aided by walks and another run-scoring wild pitch as it scored two in the first, before plating four runs on four hits in the third frame. Rylie Carlier belted her team-leading sixth home run, a solo blast, in fifth to give the North Coast squad a four-run lead.

San Marcos tied the game at 7-all with four runs of its own in the sixth. The highlight of the inning for the Cougars was a two-out, three-run triple from Melody Forstie that proved to be the equalizer.

The Cougars threatened again in the seventh with runners at first and second with no outs. Jasmine Hill entered the game in relief of starter Megan Holt and managed to finish the inning without allowing the go-ahead run. Hill earned the win, her fifth of the season, in one inning of scoreless relief.

A wild pitch was once again San Marcos' undoing in the second game of the afternoon. With runners at second and third with two outs, Carly Slack unloaded a pitch over the head of the Cougars' catcher that allowed Harris to come home and keep HSU's winning streak intact.

The series wraps with a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at the HSU Softball Field. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
