Streak Moves to Eight as Softball Sweeps Cougars

ARCATA, Calif. – Danica Grier swatted a pair of home runs as the Humboldt State softball team won both games of Saturday's doubleheader versus Cal State San Marcos and completed the series sweep. The Lumberjacks extended their winning streak to eight straight with a 7-4 victory in game one, and Jasmine Hill shut out the Cougars in an 8-0 win in the series finale.

HSU plated three runs on five hits in Saturday's first game and the home team looked like it made the offensive adjustments Head Coach Shelli Sarchett spoke about following Friday's twinbill. Micaela Harris drove in the game's first run with a double to left centerfield, and Mariah Kalamaras and Mariah Tovar followed her lead with RBI singles of their own.

Harris extended the Green and Gold advantage with an RBI base hit in the fourth, but HSU's lead wasn't safe. A solo home run to lead off the fifth courtesy of Alliya Machrone woke a San Marcos offense that finished the frame with four runs on five hits.

Grier led the Jacks' comeback with a two-run bomb to left in the sixth, and a San Marcos error three batters later made it a 7-4 advantage.

HSU starting pitcher Lexee Sheiring fanned four in 7.0 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits. The junior collected her team-leading eighth victory.

In game two, Hill kept the Cougars off the board and avoided any jams allowing only one baserunner to reach scoring position. The senior kept the ball down and 8-of-18 San Marcos batters she faced grounded out. Hill improved her record to 4-3 with the decision.

Grier belted her second home run of the afternoon in the first inning to give HSU the lead, and JoAna Mullins fired a double down the right field line to make it 2-0.

Mullins kept the offense rolling with a two-run single and Haley Suter added an RBI double to put the Jacks up 5-0 after three innings. The Jacks capitalized on a Cougar miscue for another run in the fourth, and the home team clinched the win with two more runs in the fifth.

HSU will take its winning streak on the road as it visits Stanislaus State next week. The four-game series begins Thursday at 3 p.m.
