Warriors Snap Win Streak, HSU Softball Drops Two

TURLOCK, Calif. – The Lumberjacks took an eight-game winning streak and renewed confidence into their series at Stanislaus State, but the Warriors took two from Humboldt State Thursday afternoon at Warrior Softball Field.

The opener went eight innings and the North Coast squad ended up on the wrong side of a 6-5 decision, and Stanislaus State capitalized on Green and Gold miscues in a 5-3 victory in game two.

HSU moved to 19-25 overall and 10-22 with Thursday's results.

The Jacks took a 2-0 lead in the first frame of the first game, but the home team answered with four runs over the next three innings to take a 4-2 lead. A pair of errors, including a fielding mistake by the Warriors' second baseman in the top of the fifth, led to Green and Gold runs. HSU plated three runs, all unearned, in the fifth to make it 5-4 in favor of the visitors.

Starter Lexee Sheiring ran into trouble in the bottom half of the fifth as the Warriors evened the score with a run on three hits. The score remained locked at 5-all until the eighth when a single and a failed pickoff attempt put Sydnee Machado in scoring position with one out. A groundout advanved Machado to third before a Kayla Fajardo drove in the game-winning run.

Sheiring pitched 7.2 innings and allowed six runs on 13 hits. Danica Grier led the Jacks with a pair of hits, while Hanna Holland walked twice and stole a pair of bases.

Game two was knotted at 1-1 through the first four innings as the Green and Gold struck first with a run in the first frame. Stanislaus State recorded six of their 12 hits in the fifth and sixth innings and scored two runs in the fifth to take a 3-1 lead. HSU opened the sixth with back-to-back singles from Mariah Tovar and Illa Haley, and a double steal following a fielder's choice put runners at second and third with one out. A sacrifice fly from Grier made it 3-2 and a throwing error by the Warriors' first baseman tied the game in the following at-bat.

Stanislaus State scored two runs on four hits and a throwing error in the home half of the sixth to seal the victory. Jasmine Hill took the loss in game two. The senior went the distance, but she  allowed six runs on 12 hits.

Holland finished the afternoon with five stolen bases after swiping three more in the nightcap.

HSU concludes the four-game set with Stanislaus State Friday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
