Grier Homers Twice As HSU Softball Drops Two

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – Humboldt State softball began its six-game road trip with a pair of losses to Cal State San Bernardino Friday afternoon at the Coyote Softball Field. The Lumberjacks dropped the first game 7-1 before losing game two of the twinbill 8-7.

The Coyotes scored seven runs on 13 hits in the series opener. Haley Suter hit a solo shot to deep right centerfield to lead off the fifth inning, but the Jacks' offense was limited to just four total hits.

Lexee Sheiring took the loss after allowing four runs on six hits despite recording three scoreless frames to begin the ballgame.

The home team struck first in the nightcap, grabbing a 4-0 advantage at the end of the first. With runners on first and second, Danica Grier sent a blast to left field to trim the deficit to one before RBI singles from Rylie Carlier and Suter put the Jacks up 5-4 in the top of the third frame.

Grier went yard again her next at-bat for her third round-tripper of the year as HSU pushed its lead to 6-4. San Bernardino refused to give up, scoring in the bottom of the fourth, and plating two more to end the fifth.

Trailing 7-6, a leadoff single by Micaela Harris to begin the seventh kept the Green and Gold alive. Two batters later, Harris crossed the plate following an RBI single from Carlier to tie things up.

The Green and Gold battled hard but a fielding error in the bottom of the seventh allowed the Coyotes to plate the game-winning run as they handed HSU its third straight loss.

The North Coast squad will look for better results when they wrap the series with San Bernardino Saturday. Game one of the doubleheader is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.
