Softball Salvages Series Split Versus Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – The Humboldt State softball pitching staff has been a work in progress this season, but a pair of Lumberjack starting pitchers delivered solid outings Saturday as the North Coast squad swept the doubleheader and came away with a series split versus Cal State San Bernardino.

The Green and Gold won the first game of the afternoon 2-1, and the Jacks finished the series with a 3-2 victory.

Lexee Sheiring faced the minimum through the first two frames of game one, but HSU was unable to capitalize on hits in each of the first three innings. The Jacks played small ball in the fourth as Mariah Tovar opened the inning with a single, Micaela Harris pinch ran for Tovar and moved to second on the sacrifice bunt before eventually coming home on a fielder's choice.

Claudia Lopez evened the score with a solo homer off Sheiring in the fifth before Haley Suter connected on a two-out RBI double the following inning.

Sheiring got the win, her fifth of the season, and allowed one run in seven innings.

A Rylie Carlier single, followed by a JoAna Mullins double set the table for HSU's first run in the series finale. Tovar lifted a sacrifice fly following Mullins' extra-base hit to put the Jacks on the board 1-0 in the second.

HSU plated two more runs in the fifth. Illa Haley started the frame with a double to centerfield before scoring two batters later on a squeeze play. A throwing miscue in the ensuing at-bat gave the Green and Gold a 3-0 cushion as Danica Grier, who bunted to drive in Haley, scored on the error.

A two-run dinger from slugger Morgan Ratliff in the bottom of the seventh didn't dampen a fine afternoon in the circle for Megan Holt. Holt went the distance and yielded two runs on 10 hits. She improved her record to 4-9.

The Jacks will face Dominican in a non-conference doubleheader Sunday afternoon. Game one is scheduled for 11 a.m.
