Softball Extends Winning Streak With Doubleheader Sweep

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. – Humboldt State softball took a break from its California Collegiate Athletic Association schedule and extended its winning streak. The Lumberjacks won their third and fourth consecutive games as they swept Dominican Sunday afternoon.

The North Coast squad eeked out a 3-2 win in the opener before using a five-run seventh inning in the second game to capture a 10-9 victory. HSU improved to 15-23 overall.

The Jacks struck first in the early game with an RBI single to left center from Haley Suter in the second inning. Taylor Proctor got the start for the Green and Gold and was relieved after 2.2 innings of work after allowing two runs, one earned, off four hits.

In the top of the fourth, a one-run single to right field from Mariah Tovar tied the ball game 2-2. Danica Grier gave the Lumberjacks the 3-2 advantage with an RBI single in the top of the seventh but was thrown out at second base trying to stretch her base hit into a double.

Jasmine Hill earned her fourth win of the year tossing 4.1 innings of one-hit ball and finished with a pair of strikeouts.

The Penguins got on the board first again in the series finale with a 2-0 lead. Suter hit an RBI triple in the second frame to plate the Jacks' first run before an RBI single from Tovar tied the game at two.

With two on and two outs in the top of the third, Suter doubled to left center to give HSU the 4-2 advantage. Tovar reached on a fielding error in the next at-bat, as Suter scored on the miscue.

Dominican plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth before adding three more to end the sixth, as the home team led 8-5. Down to their last three outs, the North Coast team refused to give up as an RBI single from Tovar sparked a five-run rally. With no outs and the bases loaded, Illa Haley sent a two-run double into left centerfield. Hanna Holland put down a bunt for a base hit as Haley scored on the play to give the Jacks a 10-8 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Penguins loaded the bases and scored in the bottom of the frame, but Lexee Sheiring pitched her way out of the jam en route to her sixth victory.

The Jacks return to conference play next week as they host Cal State San Marcos for a four-game series. First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for Friday, April 12 at 1 p.m. at HSU Softball Field.
