Loving and Hansen Lead The Way In Opening Day of West Region Volleyball Showcase for ‘Jacks

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.---  The Humboldt State Lumberjacks played two California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opponents in the opening day of the West Region Volleyball Showcase in San Francisco, Calif.  The 'Jacks lost both matches in four sets to San Francisco State and Cal State Dominguez Hills.  Humboldt State continues its play in the showcase tomorrow evening at 5:30pm against Fresno Pacific. 

QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Although the outcomes today weren't what we were hoping for our team showed great improvement from last weekend," said Coach Kelly Wood.  "We lost to two tough CCAA opponents who we'll look forward to facing again.  We played with much more consistency and we were lower error overall.  We have Fresno Pacific tomorrow and we'll be rested and ready for that match-up tomorrow evening."

SAN FRANCISCO STATE 3, HUMBOLDT STATE 1 (25-21, 16-25, 22-25, 21-25)

SET ONE:  The Lumberjacks (2-3) scored seven of the first nine points of the first capped by two combined blocks by Summer Hansen and Emma Flewell and a kill by Lenox Loving.  San Francisco State cut the 'Jack lead to 7-6 on a hitting error by Humboldt State.  HSU scored the next two points on a Carla Crespo service ace by Loving off of one of Riley Tishlarich's 30 assists to take 10-6 lead.  The 'Jacks took a 14-9 lead on a kill by Odelia Ryan.  A kill by Flewell increased HSU's lead to 19-11. SFSU cut the HSU lead to 23-19, but HSU closed out the set taking two of the final three points capped by a Gator hitting error to take the set 25-21.

SET TWO:  San Francisco State took a 7-3 lead in the second set capped by a Drew Morris kill.  Back to back kills by Loving cut the 'Jacks deficit to 7-6, but the Gators scored three of the next four points to take a 10-7 lead.  HSU would not go away as a service ace by Tishlarich cut the Gator lead to 11-10.  A kill by Trinity Barr increased the hosts' lead to 16-12.  A kill by Tishlarich off an assist from Lexi Riggs cut the Gator lead to 18-15, but SFSU scored seven of the final eight points to even the match at 1-1 with a 25-16 set two win.

SET THREE:  Two service aces by Crespo and a hitting error by the Gators gave the 'Jacks a 7-5 lead.  Another 'Jack ace this time by Kayla Costello the 'Jack lead to 10-6.  SFSU tied the match at 12-12 on back to back kills by Jessica Haynie and Bailey Johnson.  The 'Jacks retook the lead on a kill by Riggs, 14-12.  The Gators scored seven of the next 11 points to take a 19-13 lead.  They increased their lead to 21-19 on a hitting error by HSU.  One of Loving's game high 19 kills cut SFSU's lead to 21-20, but the Gators took a 24-20 lead on an ace by Payton Jensen.  Back to back kills by Hannah Cantrell cut the HSU deficit to 24-22.  SFSU finished the set on an error by the 'Jacks to take the set 25-22 and take a 2-1 lead in the match.

SET FOUR:  The hosts took a 5-1 early in the fourth set, but the 'Jacks did not go away as Loving's kill cut the Gator lead to 9-7.  HSU scored five of the next nine points to take a 12-11 lead keyed by two combined blocks by Malia Coyle and Hansen.  The Gators tied the match at 13-13 on a kill by Bailey Johnson.  A kill by Hansen gave HSU back the lead, 14-13.  The match went back and forth until the 'Jacks took a 21-18 lead on an ace by Ryan.  SFSU scored the final seven points of the match capped by four consecutive kills by Jessica Haynie to take the set 25-21 and the match 3-1.

ANOTHER DOUBLE-DOUBLE: Lennox Loving recorded a double-double with her match high 19 kills and 10 digs.  Riley Tishlarich had 30 assists to lead HSU while Crespo had five service aces and Hansen recorded a team leading six blocks.  Ryan led the 'Jacks with her 16 digs.  Three SFSU players had double digits in kills by Drew Morris and Jessica Haynie each with 12 kills while Bailey Johnson added 10 kills. 

CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS 3, HUMBOLDT STATE 1 (22-25, 25-19, 14-25, 17-25)

SET ONE;  The first set went back and forth until the 'Jacks took a 18-14 lead on a Toro hitting error.  The Toros took a 20-18 lead on a hitting error by the 'Jacks.  A kill by Hansen made the score 24-22, but a kill by Rylee Brown gave CSUDH a 25-22 set one victory.

SET TWO:  A kill by Hansen gave HSU a 6-3 lead early on in the second set.  The 'Jacks increased their lead to 9-5 on back to back hitting errors by the Toros.  They increased their lead to 14-8 on combined block by Flewell and Coyle.  A hitting error by HSU cut the 'Jacks lead to 16-13, but the 'Jacks increased their lead to 20-13 on a service ace by Crespo.  A service ace by CSUDH cut HSU's lead to 21-18, but the 'Jacks finished off the set taking four of the final five points evening the match at 1-1 and taking the set 25-19.

SET THREE:  Cal State Dominguez Hills took a 11-4 lead, but the 'Jacks came right and scored the next five points to cut the deficit to 11-9 on an ace by Crespo.  The Toros increased their lead to 18-10 on a hitting error by the 'Jacks.  They finished off the set taking five of the final nine points take the set 25-14 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

SET FOUR:  The Toros took a 11-5 lead, but Hsu cut the lead to 11-7 on a kill by Loving.  Cal State Dominguez Hills (5-0) took a 16-7 lead on a hitting error by HSU.  The 'Jacks cut the deficit to 18-13, but scored seven of the set's final 11 points to take the set 25-17 and the match 3-1. 

LEADERS:  Summer Hansen led HSU with 15 kills while Juliana Bertolucci had 30 assists and Lenox Loving had 19 digs.  Odelia Ryan added 15 digs and Kayla Costello 11 digs.  Emma Flewell chipped in six blocks. 

UP NEXT:  The 'Jacks will continue play in the West Region Volleyball Showcase tomorrow evening at 5pm with a match against Fresno Pacific out of the PacWest Conference.  They will finish their play on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2:30pm with a match against Dominican (Calif.), also out of the PacWest..
