Story Links

BILLINGS, Mont.--- Humboldt State's men's soccer team started off its two-game road trip in Montana with a 2-0 win over the Montana State Billings Yellowjackets in Billings, Mont., this afternoon at Yellowjacket Field.  Robert Quintero recorded four saves en route to his first shutout of the season in goal for the 'Jacks with Marco Silveira and Isaiah Dairo scoring the goals for HSU and Gus Baxter adding an assist.

QUOTES FROM COACH JUNGEMANN:  "Today was a total team effort," said Coach Jungemann.  "The defense worked hard for the shutout and the offense created some quality chances and scored two very nice goals.  We fully deserve the result against a strong and organized Billings' team."

"After being down at half-time, Billings came out and pushed hard in the second half as you would expect from a good team," added Coach Jungemann.  "Our defense fought hard though and I am proud they earned the shutout to preserve the win."

FIRST HALF:  The 'Jacks took the early 1-0 lead when Marco Silveira stole the ball from Montana State Billings' defense and put the ball into the back of net for his second goal of the season.  The 'Jacks had a chance to double their lead twice in the ninth minute when Israel Gonzalez shot was stopped by the Yellowjackets' Jessy Martin.  Then three seconds later Isaiah Dairo's shot sailed wide right.

HSU had another chance to double its lead in the 16th minute as Devin Hauenstein's shot went to the right of the net.  Dairo connected on his team leading third goal of the season off a pass into the box from Gus Baxter in the 21st minute to give the 'Jacks a 2-0 lead.  Montana State Billings' (0-2-1) first shot attempt came in the 45th minute when Paul Cuevas shot went wide of the net to send the game into the half with HSU leading 2-0.

SECOND HALF:  Robert Quintero made one of his four saves in the 57th minute when he stopped Shantik Bedrosian's shot from going into the back of the net.  MSUB had three more chances to cut into the 'Jack lead in the 59th minute but the shot attempts either sailed wide, were blocked or stopped by Quintero.  Silveira had a chance to increase HSU's lead to 3-0 in the 61st minute, but his shot went wide left of the net.

Quintero made another save in the 68th minute this time off the foot of Ignacio Crespo.  Dairo had two chances to increase the guests' lead in the 70th minute including one that was stopped by the 'Jacket keeper.  The 'Jack keeper made one last save in the 82nd minute as Humboldt State took the 2-0 victory.

FIRST SHUTOUT:  Humboldt State's defense recorded its first shutout of the season with its 2-0 win at MSUB.  Quintero had four saves en route to the shutout in goal.  They held MSUB without a shot on goal attempt the entire first half and just four for the game.

HSU ADVANTAGE: The 'Jacks held a 14-12 shot attempt advantage and a 7-4 shot on goal attempt.  MSUB did hold a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks.

UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will return to the pitch on Sunday afternoon at 1pm (MT) in Billings, Mont., when the 'Jacks face the University of Mary.  The Marauders are 0-3 after losing 2-1 to South Dakota School of Mines & Technology in Rapids City, SD, this past Wednesday afternoon.
