BILLINGS, Mont.--- Scoring their most goals since 2013, the Humboldt State Lumberjacks improved to 3-1 with a 5-1 win over the University of Mary Marauders in Billings, Mont. Five different players scored goals for the Lumberjacks in
Isaiah Dairo,
Devin Hauenstein,
Gus Baxter,
Israel Gonzalez and
Ethan Waters.
Dalton Rice and
Marco Silveira each had two assists for HSU with Dairo and
Jacob Hoffman adding the other two.
Robert Quintero had eight saves in goal for the Lumberjacks.
QUOTES FROM COACH: "We have been focusing on trying to convert our early chances and today we couldn't' have scored much earlier," said Humboldt State head coach
Fred Jungemann. "Our offense came out fired up and it really set the tone. Even after giving up a goal, the guys just kept going and we managed to take the lead through a couple of nicely worked goals before the half. "
"Two wins on the road is always difficult, particularly when its 95 degrees and you're playing on turf," added Jungemann. "I am really proud of the effort of our guys put in this weekend, two very solid team performances."
FIRST HALF: Isaiah Dairo scored his team leading third goal of the season just ten seconds into the match off a pass in the box from
Dalton Rice. The University of Mary (0-4) tied the match three minutes later when Tresor Mugawaneza connected off a missed shot by Blake Palmquist. The Marauders had two chances in the next two minutes to take the lead, but
Robert Quintero made two of his eight saves including one off the foot of Stanley Joseph in the seventh minute. Quintero made another save in the 11
th minute as he stopped Evandro Henrique's shot on goal attempt.
Humboldt State retook the lead in the 14
th minute when
Devin Hauenstein connected on a cross from Dairo that
Marco Silveira passed the ball into Hauenstein in what proved to be the game-winning goal. Quintero kept the score at 2-1, Humboldt State, when he stopped Adam Stringer's shot on attempt in the 21
st minute.
Gus Baxter doubled the Lumberjacks' lead to 3-1 when his header off a cross from Silveira went into the back of the net in the 22
nd minute. HSU had a chance to score its fourth goal in the 38
th minute, but Lukas Billhardt stopped
Angel Rodriguez's shot on goal attempt. Mary had a chance to cut into the Lumberjack lead, but Quintero stopped Joseph's shot on goal attempt as HSU took the 3-1 lead into the half.
SECOND HALF: HSU kept its offensive attack going in the second half in the first two minutes of the new half as both Baxter and Jordan Bruton had chances to increase the Lumberjacks' lead but Billhardt made two saves. The Lumberjacks increased their lead to 4-1 on a goal by
Israel Gonzalez off a ball from
Jacob Hoffman in the 55
th minute. Hauenstein had two chances to give HSU a 5-1 lead in the 60
th minute, but Billhardt stopped both of his attempts. Both Rice and
Dylan Tovani had chances to score the Lumberjacks' fifth goal of the match but Billhardt made two saves. HSU scored its fifth goal of the match in the 88
th minute when
Ethan Waters scored on a ball from Rice as the Lumberjacks took the 5-1 win.
MOST GOALS SINCE 2013: Humboldt State's five goals this afternoon is the most since a 5-0 win over San Francisco State on October 11, 2013, in Arcata. In that game, Zach Hammond scored twice while Samuel Wahl, Braxton Griffin and Ryan Connor each added a goal.
Isaiah Dairo's goal also was the fastest goal scored in school history.
LEADING THE WAY: Isaiah Dairo scored his team leading fourth goal of the season this afternoon while
Marco Silveira had two assists for his team leading third and fourth of the season.
Robert Quintero had a season high eight saves in goal for HSU to give him 22 for the season in four matches.
FINAL TUNE-UP: Humboldt State will have its final tune-up prior to opening up the CCAA season a week from today when the Lumberjacks travel to Redding, Calif., for a non-conference match with Simpson at noon. HSU will open its CCAA season at home versus San Francisco State on September 25 at 3pm.
