SAN FRANCISCO, Calif.--- Humboldt State's volleyball team improved to 4-3 with a three-game sweep of the Dominican Penguins (25-12, 25-17, 25-19) in their final game at the West Region Volleyball Showcase in San Francisco, Calif., this afternoon. The Lumberjacks finished the showcase 2-2 including their last two games of the tournament. Leading the way for the 'Jacks were
Lenox Loving (15 kills, 13 digs) and
Riley Tishlarich (31 assists, 12 digs).
QUOTES FROM COACH WOOD: "This weekend was exactly what we needed as we head into conference play this week," said Humboldt State head coach
Kelly Wood. "We finished today beating Dominican in three sets. We passed a 2.1 in serve receive which was the highest number of the season so far. Lenox (Loving) continued to have an outstanding weekend, hitting .452 with 15 kills. She passed a 2.5, and she had 13 digs. We're working on involving our middle attack more Our frosh setter, Riley (Tishlarich) is playing with a sense of confidence that is necessary in that role. We are so happy to finally to play at home next week as we start CCAA play with three very tough opponents."
FIRST SET: Dominican took a 6-4 lead to begin the match, but the Lumberjacks took a 10-6 lead on four straight points capped by a
Carla Crespo service ace. They increased their lead to 17-8 on a kill by
Lenox Loving. HSU's lead improved to 22-10 on another kill by Loving off a pass from
Riley Tishlarich. Humboldt State scored three of the final five points capped by a kill by
Hannah Cantrell and a hitting error by the Penguins to take the first set 25-12.
SECOND SET: The Lumberjacks' first straight four points of the second set with three kills by Loving and one by Loving. Dominican cut the deficit to 13-12 capped by a kill by Tiffany Wong. Humboldt State increased its lead to six (22-16) capped by a combined block by Tishlarich and
Emma Flewell. HSU finished off the set taking three of the final four points to take the set 25-17 and increase its lead to 2-0.
THIRD SET: Dominican took a 4-1 lead in the third set, but the Lumberjacks scored five of the next six points to take a 6-5 lead on back to back kills by Loving and
Malia Coyle. A hitting error by the Lumberjacks tied the match at 7-7. HSU scored the next five points including two aces by Crespo to take a 12-7 lead. Humboldt State increased its lead to 22-14 on a kill by
Summer Hansen. The Lumberjacks finished off the set and match by taking three of the final seven points led by a kill by Hansen.
LUMBERJACK LEADERS: Lenox Loving had 15 kills and 13 digs to lead the Lumberjacks while
Riley Tishlarich had 31 assists.
Carla Crespo had five of the nine service aces by HSU and
Emma Flewell had four total blocks.
Odelia Ryan led HSU with her 17 digs.
THREE MATCH HOME STAND: Humboldt State will begin its CCAA schedule with three straight home matches this week. The Lumberjacks will host Cal State Monterey Bay (Sept. 18 at 7pm), Cal Poly Pomona (Sept. 19 at 7pm) and No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino (Sept. 21 at 7pm).
