Story Links

ARCATA, Calif.---  Thanks to a boisterous Humboldt State Lumberjacks crowd, HSU's volleyball team won their home conference opener in four sets (15-25, 25-17, 25-20, 27-25) at Lumberjack Arena.  Lenox Loving led the way for the Jacks with her 15 kills and also had 12 digs while Summer Hansen added 11 kills.  Riley Tishlarich added 43 assists while Odelia Ryan chipped in a match high 22 digs.

QUOTES FROM COACH WOOD:  "Before I can even comment on tonight's match, I have to give a huge shout out to our Lumberjack Fans," said HSU head coach Kelly Wood.  "They were incredible and gave us an additional boost of energy that we needed.  They were relentless and it was an amazing atmosphere to be involved in.  In the first set, we were a little jittery and definitely showed some nerves.  We settled down in the second set and started to get in rhythm.  We need to execute better down the stretch and perform under pressure.  Overall, I am very pleased to get the win this evening and start CCAA play with a win."

FIRST SET:  Humboldt State scored the match's first four points capped by back to back to back service aces by Riley Tishlarich.  Cal State Monterey Bay scored 11 of the next 17 points capped by a Jenna Tobin service ace to take a 12-10 lead.  The Otters (4-4, 0-1 CCAA) increased their lead to 17-11 on a hitting error by the Lumberjacks.  A kill by Lexi Riggs cut the deficit to 18-13, but CSUMB scored seven of the set's final nine points to take the first set 20-15.

SECOND SET:  Back to back kills by Summer Hansen and Hannah Cantrell gave Humboldt State an early 7-1 lead in the second set.  CSUMB cut the 'Jack lead to 11-7 on a service ace by Baylie Pierson.  Another kill by Hansen off an assist from Tishlarich increased the hosts' lead to 18-10.  The Otters would not go away as they cut the 'Jack lead to 19-16 on a kill by Kaylie Honeberger.  HSU finished the second set out scoring six of the set's final seven points to take a 25-17 capped by a block by Tishlarich and a kill by Emma Flewell.

THIRD SET:  The Otters came out of the intermission and took a 4-1 lead on a Sophia Torres' service ace.  Humboldt State (5-3, 1-0 CCAA) took a 6-5 lead on a hitting error by the guests.  The match went back and forth until a Jack service error gave CSUMB a 12-9 lead.  HSU came right back and scored four consecutive points to tie the match at 18-18.  The hosts finished the set off scoring seven of the final nine points led by back to back kills by Macy Thomas and Hannah Cantrell as they took the set 25-20 and took a 2-1 lead in the match.

FOURTH SET:  In what was the final set of the match, the fourth set went back and forth until HSU took a 14-8 lead on a kill by Flewell off an assist from Tishlarich.  The 'Jacks increased their lead to 16-9 on a combined block by Hansen and Flewell.  Cal State Monterey Bay did not go away as the Otters tied the set at 19-19.  The 'Jacks came right back and took a 21-19 lead.  A kill by the Otters' Kaylie Honberger gave CSUMB a 24-23 lead.  HSU retook the lead, 25-24, on an Otter hitting error.  A kill by Pierson for CSUMB tied the set at 25-25.  The 'Jacks took the set, 27-25, and the match 3-1 on a kill by Loving and a hitting error by CSUMB.
