Story Links

REDDING, Calif.---  For the second consecutive match, Humboldt State's men's soccer team scored five goals to key the Lumberjacks' 5-1 win over the Simpson RedHawks this afternoon in Redding, Calif.  Israel Gonzalez scored two of HSU's goals while Devin Hauenstein, Jacob Hoffman and Ethan Waters each scored for the Lumberjacks (4-1).

QUOTES FROM COACH JUNGEMANN:  "Our guys played really well today," said head coach Fred Jungemann.  "We started sharp and did not look back.  It was another strong team performance with solid defending and some creative play upfront that lead to some quality goals.  A quality performance overall, that our guys should be proud of."

FIRST HALF:  The Lumberjacks had a chance to take the early lead just four minutes into the match, when Israel Gonzalez's shot sailed wide past the net.  Two minutes later, Marco Silveira had two chances to give the 'Jacks the 1-0 lead, but Chase Sherman stopped both chances.  HSU had another chance a minute later when Isaiah Dairo's shot was stopped by Sherman.

The 'Jacks kept the pressure going in the 13th minute when both Gonzalez's and Devin Hauenstein's shots on goal attempts were stopped by Sherman.  HSU took the 1-0 lead when Gonzalez's header went into the back of the net off a ball from Silveira in the 18th minute.  With just six minutes left in the half, both Jacob Hoffman and Hauenstein had chances to increase the visitors' lead but Sherman made two more saves for Simpson (2-5).  HSU doubled its lead in the 40th minute on a goal by Hauenstein off a ball from Nicholas Falco.  Gus Baxter had a chance to increase the Lumberjacks' lead to 3-0 in the final seconds of the half, but Sherman stopped the 'Jack attempt

SECOND HALF:  Simpson had a chance to cut into the 'Jack lead early in the second half when Robert Quintero stopped Alred Kander's shot on goal attempt in the 49th minute.  HSU took a 3-0 lead on a goal by Hoffman off an assist from Jordan Bruton in the 61st minute.  Twelve minutes later, the 'Jacks took a 4-0 lead on Gonzalez's second goal of the match this time off an assist from Angel Rodriguez.  Simpson scored its first goal in the 87th minute when Harry Lee connected on a ball from Alfred Kander.  The visitors increased their lead to 5-1, when Ethan Waters connected on a penalty kick in the final minute of the match.

BACK TO BACK 5'S:  For the second consecutive match, Humboldt State scored five goals.  Last Sunday, HSU defeated the University of Mary 5-1 in Billings, Mont.  Another five happened today as Marco Silveira had his team leading fifth assist of the season.

A FIRST:  Freshman Jacob Hoffman scored his first goal of the season this afternoon.  In HSU's win over Mary last weekend, Hoffman had his first collegiate assist.

QUINTERO:  Robert Quintero had two saves in goal for the Lumberjacks this afternoon to improve to 4-1 in goal for the 'Jacks.  He has a 1.60 goals against average with a .750 saves percentage.
