ARCATA, Calif.--- Humboldt State's volleyball team will begin its 2019 regular season this weekend in Carson, Calif., when the Lumberjacks participate in the Toro Classic. The 'Jacks will face Cal State Dominguez Hills, Academy of Art and Notre Dame de Namur in three non-conference region match-ups at the Torodome on the campus of Cal State Dominguez Hills this Friday and Saturday, Sept. 6-7. HSU will open up the classic on Friday facing the Toros at 1:30pm. The 'Jacks will finish the classic on Saturday at 10am versus Academy of Art and Notre Dame de Namur at 2pm.
LUMBERJACKS: Humboldt State went 3-23 last season. The 'Jacks return ten letter-winners from last year's team and welcomes four newcomers to the 2019 team. Of the returnees,
Hannah Cantrell had 128 kills and 58 total blocks for the 'Jacks last season.
Summer Hansen added 126 kills while
Juliana Bertolucci had 575 assists. Odellia Ryan is the leading returner with 25 service aces and 268 digs.
TOROS: Cal State Dominguez Hills went 9-16 last season including 4-13 in the CCAA. Leading the way for the Toros' returnees are Jordan Ramirez with her 668 assists, 180 digs and 26 service aces. Rylee Brown leads the returners with her 180 kills from last year.
Humboldt State and the Toros will face each other on Friday in a rare non-conference match-up. The 'Jacks leads the all-time series 15-9.
URBAN KNIGHTS: Academy of Art went 1-29 last season including 1-21 in the PacWest. The Urban Knights' top returners are Ashley Pawlak (253 kills, 289 digs), Picabo Reinhold (676 assists, 26 service aces) and Jillian Wheaton (93 total blocks).
The 'Jacks lead the all-time series with Academy of Art 6-3 including winning five of the last six meetings. Humboldt State won last year's meeting 3-0 in Turlock, Calif.
ARGONAUTS: Notre Dame de Namur finished the 2018 season 9-21 including 8-14 in the PacWest. Rowan Jack and Rebecca Lee are the top returners for the Argonauts. Jack had 299 kills, 367 digs and 22 aces while Lee had 72 blocks for NDNU.
HSU leads the all-time series with the Argonauts 5-2 with NDNU winning the last two meetings 3-0 last season in Belmont, Calif., and 3-1 in 2017 in Lacey, Wash.
UP NEXT: The 'Jacks will participate in the 2019 West Region Volleyball Showcase in San Francisco, Calif., Sept. 12-13 on the campus of San Francisco State. HSU will face two CCAA opponents and two PacWest opponents in the Showcase. The 'Jacks will take on San Francisco State and Cal State Dominguez Hills, Fresno Pacific and Dominican of California. HSU will have its home and CCAA opener on Sept. 18 at 7pm when the 'Jacks host Cal State Monterey Bay.
