Box Score ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--- Humboldt State took a 2-0 lead in the first 29 minutes of this afternoon's match in Rohnert Park, Calif., but that wasn't enough as Sonoma State rallied for a 4-2 victory in both team's CCAA opener. HSU's two goals were by
Isaiah Dairo and
Gus Baxter.
QUOTE FROM THE COACH: "Playing at Sonoma State is always a difficult game and today was no exception," said head coach
Fred Jungemann. "We started the game well, but there were dangerous, even when they were behind. Once they were able to tie the game, that gave them a lot of momentum and confidence which made the game even more difficult. We will learn from the experience and look to bounce back with an improved performance at home next week."
FIRST HALF: Eighteen minutes into the match, Humboldt State (4-2, 0-1 CCAA) looked like the 'Jacks were going to take the lead but
Devin Hauenstein's shot on goal attempt was stopped by Sonoma State's Derik Engebretsen. Just two minutes later,
Isaiah Dairo on his team leading fifth goal of the season to give HSU the 1-0 lead.
Robert Quintero stopped the Seawolves' Kyle Owings from tying the match in the 25
th minute. The 'Jacks doubled their lead in the 29
th minute as
Gus Baxter connected on a penalty kick.
HSU didn't hold that lead long as Sebastian Santos cut the 'Jack lead in half on a ball from Sahr Mattia in the 32
nd minute. The Seawolves kept the momentum as they tied the match just two mintues later on a goal by Ulysses Vega. SSU looked like the hosts were going to take the lead in the 37
th minute, when Mattia's shot went high over the net to send the match into the half tied at 2-2.
SECOND HALF: In the 53
rd minute, Sonoma State (2-3-1, 1-0 CCAA) too kthe lead for good on a goal by Brian Field off a ball from Santos. The Seawolves doubled their lead to 4-2 on another goal by Field this time off a ball from Sean Rohane and Evan Roehrig. Quintero made three more saves in the final minute as SSU took the 4-2 CCAA victory.
GOALIE: Robert Quintero had seven saves in goal for the 'Jacks. For Sonoma State, Derik Engrebretsen had one save in the first 52 minutes while Ryan Kelly had no saves in the final 38 minutes.
UP NEXT: The Lumberjacks will return to the pitch next weekend at home when they face Chico State and Stanislaus State. HSU will host Chico State a week from today at 3pm and Stanislaus State on Sunday, October 6 at 2pm.
