SAN RAFAEL, Calif.--- Gus Baxter's penalty kick in the 91
st minute gave the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks a 4-3 come-from-behind win in overtime over Dominican University of California this afternoon in San Rafael, Calif.
Dalton Rice scored two of the 'Jacks' goals including the game-tying goal in the 82
nd minute.
Isaiah Dairo also scored for HSU while David Hauenstein, Maxwell Ward and
Jacob Aguilera each had assists.
QUOTES FROM THE COACH: "Today was a perfect example of a first game of the season for both teams," said Coach
Fred Jungemann. "There was good and bad on both sides of the ball. The most obvious positive for us today though, was the mentality to fight back from behind twice. We will adjust and look to improve on today's performance for Sunday against a tough Holy Names' team."
FIRST HALF: Humboldt State had a chance to take the early 1-0 lead in the ninth minute when
Marco Silveira's shot was stopped by the Penguins' Ruben Raygoza. In the 29
th minute, Dominican took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Luke Raley off a ball from Roberto Garcia. The Penguins didn't hold on to the lead for long as in the 33
rd minute, HSU tied the match at 1-1 on a goal by
Dalton Rice off a ball from David Hauenstein. The hosts had a chance to take the lead with five seconds left when Khalil Means' shot was blocked by the 'Jacks defense.
SECOND HALF: Dominincan retook the lead early in the second half when Raley connected on a penalty kick in the 47
th minute. The Penguins doubled their lead in the 52
nd minute on a goal by Colin Gunby off a ball from Maxwell Ward. HSU cut the deficit in half on a goal by
Isaiah Dairo on a ball from Silveira in the 60
th minute.
Gus Baxter had a chance to tie the match at 3-3 in the 62
nd minute, but Raygoza made the save. With just nine minutes left in the match, Rice connected on his second goal of the match off a ball from
Jacob Aguilera to tie the match at 3-3. The match remained tied at 3-3 to send the match into overtime.
OVERTIME: The Lumberjacks didn't wait long for the golden goal. In the 91
st minute,
Gus Baxter's shot was blocked and then he was fouled 13 seconds later and connected on the penalty kick to give HSU the 4-3 overtime lead.
GOALIES: Robert Quintero had three saves in goal for HSU while Ruben Raygoza had four in goal for the Penguins.
HSU ADVANTAGE: Humboldt State held a 14-11 shot advantage including a 9-6 advantage in the final 46 minutes. The 'Jacks also had a 7-5 advantage in shots on goal.
