ARCATA, Calif..--- Despite a late surge by the Humboldt State Lumberjacks, the UC San Diego Tritons (11-4, 7-3 CCAA) recorded an 88-82 victory. Five players scored in double digits for Humboldt State paced by
Alexia Thrower's 24 points.
Tyra Turner added 18 points while
Madeline Hatch chipped in 14 points.
Gabrielle Carbajal added 13 points and
Molly Dixon scored 11 points for the 'Jacks.
FIRST QUARTER: An
Alexia Thrower jumper gave Humboldt State an early 5-2 lead. UC San Diego came right back and went on a 12-6 run capped by a three by Julia Macabuhay to take a 14-11 lead. A three by Sydney Brown gave UC San Diego a 17-11 lead with 2:03 left in the first quarter. A jumper by
Gabrielle Carbajal capped an 8-2 run by the Lumberjacks as they tied the game at 19-19. A jumper by Brown gave UC San Diego a 21-19 lead heading into the second quarter.
SECOND QUARTER: Humboldt State (9-6, 5-5 CCAA) started the second quarter on a 7-2 run capped by a jumper by
Alexia Thrower and took a 26-24 lead two minutes into the quarter. UC San Diego came right back and took a 32-26 lead with five minutes left in the half. The Tritons increased their lead to 38-28 on a lay-up by Sydney Brown. They took a 43-34 lead heading into the locker room on a three by Sydney Sharp.
THIRD QUARTER: In the first five minutes of the second half, UC San Diego took a 54-40 lead on a three by
Tyla Turner. A jumper by Julia Macabuhay gave the Tritons a 59-42 lead, but the Lumberjacks cut the deficit to 66-50 on a three by
Tyra Turner heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: Humboldt State cut the deficit to 76-65 with 5:17 left in regulation on a jumper by
Molly Dixon. A three by Dixon off a pass from Turner made it 80-74 with just 71 seconds left in the game. A made free throw by
Tyla Turner increased the Tritons' lead to 83-74. The Lumberjacks would not go away as a jumper by
Alexia Thrower cut the Triton lead to 84-78 with just 32 ticks left in the game. UC San Diego went three for four from the line as the Tritons took a 87-78 lead, but back to back jumpers by Turner and Thrower made the final 88-82.
