Total Team Effort Keys Lumberjacks’ Road Win In Overtime

CARSON, Calif.--- Five players scored in double digits for the visiting Humboldt State Lumberjacks to key their 98-93 overtime win over the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros.  The Lumberjacks shot 64.7% from the field including 58.8% from three's as Isaiah Pope scored a career high 21 points for the victors.  Also scoring in double digits were Rob Lewis (20 points), Zachariah Christian (18 points), Jackson Strong (14 points) and Amari Green (10 points). 
 
FIRST HALF:  Humboldt State (7-9, 3-8 CCAA) took a 9-4 lead on a Zachariah Christian lay-up off a pass from Jackson Strong.  The Toros went on a 15-5 run to take a 19-14 lead at the 12:59 mark of the first half.  The Lumberjacks came right back with a 11-0 run to take a 25-19 lead capped by a jump shot by Leland Green off a pass from Arash Poorsina.  Twice Cal State Dominguez Hills cut HSU's deficit to one including on a jumper by Kaden Bradley with 7:48 left in the half (27-26).  An Isaiah Pope three capped a 10-2 run by the visitors as they took a 37-28 lead with 3:37 left in the half.  Two free throws by Pope increased the Lumberjacks' lead to 41-31.  A made free throw but the CSUDH deficit to 45-37 heading into the half. 
 
SECOND HALF:  Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-9, 4-7 CCAA) started the second half outscoring the Lumberjacks 14-4 to tie the game at 51-51 in the first six minutes of the new half.  A lay-up by Isaiah Pope off a pass from Amari Green capped a 6-0 run by the 'Jacks as they took a 57-51 lead.  An Amari Green lay-up increased the guests' lead to 69-62 with a little under seven minutes left in regulation.  Two free throws by Zachariah Christian increased the Lumberjack lead to 73-62 with 5:32 on the clock.  The hosts did not go away as they went on a 15-4 run to tie the game on a three by Alex Garcia with 65 seconds to go in regulation at 77-77.  Humboldt State took a 79-77 lead on a lay-up by Christian off a pass from Amari Green.  Garcia connected on a lay-up to tie the game at 79-79 on the Toros' next possession.  HSU had a chance to tie the game but it fell short to send the game into overtime.
 
OVERTIME:  Zachariah Christian scored six of the guests' first eight points as HSU took an 87-80 lead in the first two and a half minutes of the overtime.  An Amari Green lay-up increased the guests' lead to 89-81 with 1:40 on the clock in overtime.  The Lumberjacks sealed the win as Isaiah Pope and Jackson Strong each went two-for-two from the line as HSU took a 93-85 victory.
 
ONCE AGAIN BALANCED SCORING:  Five players scored in double digits for the Lumberjacks paced by Isaiah Pope career high 21 points.  Rob Lewis chipped in 20 points while Zachariah Christian added 18 points.  Jackson Strong scored 14 points and Amari Green added 10 points for the victors.
 
CAREER NIGHT FOR POPE:  Isaiah Pope had a career high 21 points for the Lumberjacks this evening.  He also tied his career high with five field goals made and six rebounds.  The freshman guard also had seven free throws made four threes. 
 
10 THREES:  Humboldt State went 10-for-17 from three-point range this evening paced by Isaiah Pope's four-for-five night.  Jackson Strong went three-for-six while Rob Lewis was two-for-two.  Leland Green made one of his two attempts from beyond the arc.
 
BACK IN PLAY-OFF HUNT:  With the win this evening, Humboldt State is in a tie for eleventh place but just one game out of seventh place.  There is a four-way tie for seventh place with Cal State L.A., Cal State Dominguez Hills, Cal State San Marcos and San Francisco State.  The top eight teams at the end of the regular season receive a bid to the CCAA Championships. 
 
UP NEXT:  The Lumberjacks will travel to Los Angeles this Saturday afternoon for a 3pm rematch with Cal State L.A., who they defeated 93-81 in November in Arcata.  The Golden Eagles lost 85-77 to Stanislaus State earlier this evening in Los Angeles.
