ARCATA, Calif..--- The Humboldt State Lumberjacks used a total team effort to key their 82-78 win over the visiting Cal State East Bay Pioneers (13-6, 9-4 CCAA).
Alexia Thrower paced the Lumberjacks with 25 points while
Tyra Turner had a season high 23 points to go with her eight assists.
Molly Dixon chipped in 14 points while
Madeline Hatch added 10 points for the victors.
FIRST QUARTER: An
Alexia Thrower lay-up off an assist from
Gabrielle Carbajal gave the hosts an early 4-1 lead. Humboldt State increased its lead to 21-10 on a jumper by
Molly Dixon with 2:56 left in the first quarter. The 'Jacks took a 25-12 lead on a jumper by Carbajal. Cal State East Bay finished (13-6, 9-4 CCAA) finished the quarter on a 4-0 run to cut the 'Jack lead to 25-16.
SECOND QUARTER: A
Tyra Turner three started an 8-2 run to begin the second quarter for the hosts as they took a 33-18 lead. The Pioneers cut the 'Jack lead to 41-32 on a three by Kelly Hsiung with 2:20 left in the half. The visitors kept their run going as they cut the Humboldt State lead to 45-40 on a Kincso Kelelmen three heading into the half.
THIRD QUARTER: Humboldt State (10-8, 6-7 CCAA) started the second half on an 8-0 run as the Lumberjacks took a 53-40 lead on a three by
Molly Dixon off a pass from
Tyra Turner. A lay-up by
Alexia Thrower increased HSU's lead to 57-42 with 6:16 left in the third quarter. A three by
Gabrielle Carbajal followed by a
Tyra Turner lay-up increased the hosts' lead to 64-46 with just 3:02 left in the third quarter. Cal State East Bay finished the quarter on a 9-3 run to cut the 'Jack lead to 67-55 heading into the final quarter.
FOURTH QUARTER: The Pioneers kept its run going as they cut the 'Jack lead to 74-66 six minutes into the final quarter. A three by
Tyra Turner gave HSU back a double-digit lead (77-66) with just 3:12 left on the clock. Cal State East Bay did not go away as the visitors cut the HSU lead to 77-74 with just 1:43 to go in regulation. The Lumberjacks'
Alexia Thrower made free throws as they took an 82-74 lead with 13 ticks to go in the game. Back to back jumpers by Madison Schiller and Kincso Kelemen made the final 82-78 Lumberjacks.
SPLIT THE SEASON SERIES: With the 82-78 win by Humboldt State, the Lumberjacks split the season series with Cal State East Bay as each team won on its home court. The Pioneers defeated Humboldt State 59-58 back on December 14 in Hayward.
SEASON HIGH: Tyra Turner scored a season high 23 points this evening by going 10-for-21 from the field including connecting on three of her five attempts from beyond the arc. She also had eight assists to go with her three steals. She now has scored 1040 points in her career and dished out 467 assists.
FOUR IN DOUBLE DIGITS: Besides
Tyra Turner's 23 points, three other players scored in double digits in for HSU in
Alexia Thrower (25 points),
Molly Dixon (14 points) and
Madeline Hatch (10 points).
13 FROM BEYOND THE ARC: Humboldt State went 13-for-21 from beyond the arc this evening paced by
Molly Dixon's four threes.
Tyra Turner connected on three three's while
Madeline Hatch and
Alexia Thrower each made two and
Gabrielle Carbajal and
Sandin Kidder each made one.
HALF-GAME OUT: With their win this evening, Humboldt State is just a half-game out of the final spot for the CCAA Basketball Championships. The Lumberjacks have a 6-7 CCAA record, which is one half-game behind Cal State L.A. (6-6).
BACK HOME SATURDAY: Humboldt State will host Monterey Bay this Saturday at 5:30pm. The Otters lost 75-66 at Stanislaus State this evening in Turlock.
