Story Links

ARCATA, Calif.-- Humboldt State Lumberjacks finished the weekend 2-0 after a 81-55 win over the visiting Cal State Monterey Bay Otters this evening at Lumberjack Arena.  Four players scored in double digits paced by Tyra Turner's game high 20 points.  Gabrielle Carbajal recorded her first double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds while Molly Dixon and Alexia Thrower each chipped in 17 points.

QUOTES FROM THE COACH:  "I'm really pleased with the girls' effort and competitive spirit these past two games," said head coach Michelle Bento-Jackson.  "It's not a coincidence that when we play hard, when we fight, and when we're aggressive that good things happen for us as a team.  It's too late in the season for us to be inconsistent in these areas.  I thought we executed well on the defensive end tonight and got great balance on offense.  We need to keep this mindset and have a great week of practice as we prepare for a tough road trip next week."

FIRST QUARTER:  The first five minutes of the game went back and forth until Camille Parker's jumper gave Cal State Monterey Bay (4-12, 4-10 CCAA) a 9-6 lead.  The Lumberjacks outscored 7-0 in the next four minutes to take a 13-9 lead capped by a Gabrielle Carbajal three off a pass from Tyra Turner.  A lay-up by Sylvia Vartazarian cut the 'Jack lead to 13-11 heading into the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER:  Humboldt State (11-8, 7-7 CCAA) started the second quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 25-11 lead capped by a Tyra Turner lay-up.  Two made free throws by Turner increased the 'Jack lead to 29-13. A three by Molly Dixon off another assist from Tyra Turner with 2:42 left in the half gave HSU a 32-15 lead.  Cal State Monterey Bay cut the Lumberjack lead to 32-30, but a jumper by Turner gave the 'Jacks a 34-20 lead heading into the half.

THIRD QUARTER:  A trey by Molly Dixon off a pass from Tyra Turner gave HSU a 42-24 lead two minutes into the third quarter.  An old-fashioned three-point play by Camille Parker cut the hosts' lead to 42-27, but HSU scored nine of the next twelve points to take a 51-30 lead on a lay-up by Dixon.  A free throw by Turner gave HSU a 60-41 lead heading into the final ten minutes.

FOURTH QUARTER:  Cal State Monterey Bay started the final quarter outscoring the 'Jacks 7-2 to cut the deficit to 62-48.  A three by Madeline Hatch off an assist from Gabrielle Carbajal gave HSU a 69-48 lead with just 5:45 on the clock.  The hosts took a 78-49 lead on a jumper by Alexia Thrower off a pass from Sandin Kidder with just 2:02 left in regulation.  An old-fashioned three-point play by Thrower gave the 'Jacks their largest lead of the game, 81-51.  A lay-up by Izzy Benton made the final 81-55 Humboldt State.

EIGHTH PLACE:  Humboldt State went 2-0 this week to improve to 7-7 in the CCAA.  The 'Jacks are now in eighth place in the CCAA, just .083 percentage points out of seventh place (Chico State) and 1.5 games out of sixth place (Cal Poly Pomona) and two out of third place (Sonoma State, Cal State East Bay and Stanislaus State).

BACK TO BACK 20-POINT EFFORTS:  For the first time this season, Tyra Turner had back to back 20-point games.  For the weekend, she averaged 21.5 points in HSU's two victories.  This evening, she scored 20 points while going eight-for-15 from the field while making one of her three attempts from beyond the arc.  She also went three-for-four from the line while grabbing four rebounds, blocking one shot, dishing out six assists and recording three steals.

TWO WITH 17:  Alexia Thrower and Molly Dixon each scored 17 points this evening for the 'Jacks.  They went a combined 14-for-21 from the field including two-for-six from beyond the arc while going four-for-nine from the line.

DOUBLE-DOUBLE:  Gabrielle Carbajal recorded her first double-double of the season this evening by scoring 11 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.  She also had five assists to go with her two steals.  She went four-for-seven from the field and three-for-four from beyond the arc.

UP NEXT:  Humboldt State will be back on the road next weekend for a pair of CCAA games.  HSU will be in La Jolla on Thursday, January 30 for a 5:30pm match-up with UC San Diego.  The 'Jacks will be in San Marcos on Saturday, February 1 for 1pm match-up with Cal State San Marcos.
